My new MXT Pro will be shipping Monday, which means I may have it for next weekend. I can't wait to get out and start hunting with it. I have been reading every bit of info I can find on it, I bought a copy of the "MXT Edge" which should be here a few days ahead of the machine, and have been watching all the videos I can. I am liking the simplicity of this machine and the aggressive ground tracking. I will be hunting this machine exclusively, I plan on outfitting it with a DX-1 probe and a couple different DD coils. But for now will put the 12" spider to the test around my area. Not sure how it will perform, as my mineralization is moderate to high, with black sand in the mix on my beaches. We'll see, I will keep you posted.

Enjoy the MXT pro it'll do you well.

Oh yeah! You're going to love your MXT Pro. The more you use it, the more you'll get to know it and the machine will do you proud. (wish I had a nickel for every time I've said that) I've had my MXT since they came out and still would not part with any other. I've got a brand new DFX in the box that I won and won't even get it out to give it a try. My hubby, Larry has had many top of the line machines and I still wouldn't trade him for any. I love my MXT and I know you will too. Good luck and keep us posted of your finds. Happy Hunting for sure.............Nancy

Hi Lightstryder,

The book "The MXT Edge" is outstanding. However, Jeff Foster wrote it for the MXT before the MXT Pro hit the market. Everything in the book can be applied to the MXT Pro but there are some switch, knob and push button control differences between the two models that can cause confusion when reading the book. The attached jpg file is a chart composed by Jeff Foster that lays out the control differences making the book more clearly apply to the MXT Pro.

You are going to love the MXT Pro.

Good luck
Bob

Thanks Bob!
Actually I just got my copy of MXT Edge yesterday in the mail, and it has that table in it. It's people like you Bob that make this forum great! Thanks for the help, I am getting excited!

Thanks for getting back to me with that, Lightstryder. It makes sense that the table would be added to the later editions of The MXT Edge but this is the first time I heard it was included.

You mentioned wanting to use your 12" spider coil on black sand beaches. A 950 coil works a lot better than the 12" on my So Cal black sand beaches. The big coil picks up way too much ground signal when there is lots of black sand. If you plan to hunt high trash sites like most city parks, you will soon want a much smaller search coil. I prefer concentric coils on an MXT so an Eclipse 5.3 (a 6.5" round concentric) would be my choice until the trash levels become extreme requiring an Eclipse 4X6 Shooter.

Good luck. You are in for a fun ride.

Good advice Bob, it isn't that I want to hunt the beaches with the 12", it's just the fact that I am on a budget so I may have to use what I have until I can afford other coils. I was thinking of going the 10 x 6 DD route first, what do you think about that coil for Central California beaches?

I am primarily a coin and jewelry hunter at turf sites in Ventura County. I occasionally, 2 or 3 times per year, hunt a local beach. I am not an expert at saltwater beach hunting. However, my experience using an MXT / MXT Pro is that I do better with concentric coils than DD coils both inland and at the beach.

A couple of years ago I started a black sand beach hunt with a 10 DD mounted on my MXT Pro. It did fine in the dry sand. When I got to the wet sand I switched to Salt mode, did a complete GB, started hunting and immediately got lots of falsing. In fact I did Ground Balancing multiple times sometimes locking afterwards, reduced Gain but the falsing continued until I moved back to the dry sand. I worked my way back to the car, mounted a 950 coil and returned to the wet sand. I did the same GB procedure with the Gain still fairly high and the falsing happened so seldom that I can almost say it ended. Yes, I found some good targets in the wet sand with the 950.

I have never tried the 6X10 at the beach however it works really well on my V3i for turf hunting. By the way, the 10 DD from above works great on the V3i in turf. However, the Eclipse 950 also works better at the beach on the V3i than the 10 DD.

For truly expert advice about coil selection in your hunt sites I suggest you try to find a detecting club. I know you are locate somewhere on the central coast so hopefully one of the clubs listed below is near you.
