I was detecting last evening at a local beach. There were so many people on the beach and in the water due to the extreme heat here in South Jersey. I was in an area midway between the high tide and low tide mark and all I was digging was pennies. A few people were watching me and the little kids were out of control. They would jump in the hole I was digging and start scooping out sand with their hands. I couldn't wait to move on down the beach. I got a target, which I knew by the tone wasn't gold or silver. I figured it was another sandy zinc penny. As I dug the target, I thought I saw a silver edge, like a stainless earring. It was a ring that I picked it up quickly and put into my pouch. I thought it was a junk Avon ring that looked great, but had no value. A little further down the beach I took a closer look at the ring and saw "PLAT" marked on the inside and it appeared to have a large center stone with 3 diamonds on either side. When I got home, I tested it and the stones came up "diamond" on my tester. I think the center stone is at least one karat. I will be checking this ring out with my local jeweler on Monday. After ten years of detecting, this was my first platinum find. HH
