Well, actually its just a base metal (some brass alloy).
It was really shining for me though when I dug it out of a sidewalk repair in front of an 1845 house:)

Nice find. A friend gave me one of those once, said he found it in an attic. I was never quite certain what it was so it's still sitting in a jar in my closet.
