It's all Todds fault....

About a week ago, Todd made a post with photo's about an old friend of his that is a boat/ship builder. The photo's were of a wooden ship the guy had just finished. Having always been interested in sailing ships, and the craftsmanship and work that went into building some of the nicer ones throughout history, I started looking on ebay for a nice wood model, one that is already built. I lost out on several that I bid on, mostly I was concentrating on the USS Constitution, and the USS Constellation. Both of these ships have some Civil War history (training ships), plus they were both built about the same time that the house that I live in was built, 1797. I didn't know this until recent research in the last few days, that there was actually 2 USS Constellations (sailing ships). The first one was built in 1797, and destroyed by the U.S. Navy in the mid-1800's(deemed derelict). As that one was being destroyed, they were in the process of finishing another one at the same yard, which they also named USS Constellation. That is the ship that is now berthed as a national monument in Baltimore, Maryland (the Constitution is berthed in Boston).

Anyway, I finally was the highest bidder on this 40" long model of the Constellation. Eventually, I would like to get another model ship; I have it narrowed down to a couple. One of them is... now don't laugh... a French flag ship "Le Saint Espirit" (last photo) that helped win the Revolutionary War at Yorktown where Cornwallis surrendered, due to the heavy bombardment from the French and American armada. But until I can fill my little piggy bank again, it will have to wait.
