On my way home from work Monday I saw a dozer clearing a pieceof land with a barn on it so I stopped and asked permission, he said "sure you can't hurt anything" by the way there was a house over there.... So since then I have been hitting it every day after work. So far I have 35 pennies (one a 1940 wheat) and 2 dimes (both 1980). The finds are coming from both sides of where the porch was out about 20' and out to 30' in front of it. I am getting a bunch of multiple signals showing up as junk, so I ordered a 4.5" coil. So, will the GTP 1350 "only" find pennies? Do I have to move up to the 2500 to get quarters or maybe some silver??

sounds like your just getting the first layer,, the older the stuff the deeper it will be in most cases. especially with a old homestead that had a lot of activity. if it had a big yard check for old clothslines, big trees, or were kids would have played. good luck tim

Keep at it. The 1350 will find anything that's buried there unless it has been covered up by the dozer. Are you hunting the dirt moved by the dozer. You might try following along behind it.

Also old cellars, outhouse pits, wells and cisterns. During harvest they used to feed the hired help out in the front or back yard.

THANK YOU ALL for the insight!! I was thinking, the funny part is I can't find any plumbing! no water lines, sewer lines or anything!! The house was already dozed into a pit and burned, so I have no idea what it looked like. The only remaing structure is an old very small barn ( 30' square maybe). I have checked the walls etc, waiting for the dozer to push it over to get under the wood floor.

That means they had wells, cellar, and an outhouse.

Went back this afternoon till the stormy weather ran me off. I am still looking for anything like a cellar, outhouse, well etc, but so far it is hiding. All the brush that was piled where the back yard would have been, has been pushed into the burning pit, so I will have a go at the backyard in the morning.... I did find this in the field.

Well rusted ax head. Outhouse pits will be nothing more than depressions in the ground by now. You can use a long metal probe to identify them as folks dumped everything into them - including some valuable bottles, dishware, etc. So watch how you probe.
Bill

Sounds like a plan, how long should the probe be? Rifle cleaning rod size, or longer?

Four to six feet would be fine. Many of those pits are fairly deep.

While out today I found a concrete slab, about 3' square on the low side of the homesite. It was about 5" thick, and had strange rebar holding it together, instead of being round, it was square and spiraled. Since the tractor had run over it a few times the concrete was broken up, I removed it and scanned with both detectors and all searchcoils. I found 3 pennies around where the slab was, but nothing under it. Oh, there was solid dirt under the slab.

Cool ax head. if you soak it in vinegar for a couple of days, then go at it with a wire bruch, you will get most of that rust off and be left with an interesting looking relic. so, did the 1350 find that too? I just got a GTP last week and have been out for several hunts. It seems to go at least as deep as the 1500 with the stock coil, but is a little more sensitive to small targets. My turn to get some silver is coming up soon!

Yes, the 1350 found it about 6 or so inches down directly under a fenceline. I haven't gotten my silver yet!!

Yeah John it is very sensitive to small stuff. Hope you luck out and find some small gold rings.
