It's about 2 acres of land his friend owns. The house on the property is also old and his parents owned it before this friend of his, and so they know nobody has ever hunted this property. The depot I guess is no longer there (I think he said) but he's already researched where it stood and has a satelite map printed out with things marked on it so we can get our bearings on site. The icing on the cake is that the house is also old and that there is even an old hitching post on the property and an old well. Should be a great hunt, even if it turns out the depot isn't on the property like he's sure it is from his research.
Best part too is that my main hunting friend in our circle of hunting guys can come along with us, as his friend say no problem to bring along an extra guy.
I hope to do some pictures and maybe some video to post if this turns out to be as good as I hope. We are planning on either a Sunday or Monday hunt. Can't wait!
Since this guy is new, besides showing him more on how to set up and ground balance his machine, along with setting discrimination just high enough to knock out iron (if I can't talk him into keeping iron accepted so he can hear the iron and "map" the site out in his mind), I also plan to have him check and dig a few potential old coin signals me and my friend come across so the guy knows what he's looking for...And how even iffy coin hits should be dug at such a place due to the probability of a lot of iron masking stuff. Want to also let him know to call me over on any hits he gets he thinks might be coins so I can tell him if I think it's going to be a good one and to be careful with digging it so as not to stratch a nice silver coin or such.
My main hunting friend also isn't greedy as well, so I'm sure he'll be calling him over to check and dig a few of his coin hits as well so the guy can come up to speed faster on old coin hunting.
This should be a blast I hope. Best sounding site to come along in a while for us. Guy also told me he has many old houses of relatives lined up for the future so sounds like we are opening a big door here with adding a new guy to our circle of hunters. Problem is me and my buddy are going to need to come up with some new virgin sites to pay this guy in return. We've pretty much burned out all our private land sites. Meaning, for a newbie to have an easy hunt, because no place is ever hunted out but it's nice to get a newbies feet wet with an untouched site. Trying to hunt a pounded out site while learning to detect is a good way to turn a guy off to the hobby real fast. Far better for a newbie to hunt for clads in a modern park where they are plentiful then to put them on an old site that you've got to know what you are doing to pull more keepers out of.
