but at least I was DIGGING. There is still 4-6 inches on snow in places here, which makes it tough but I have to get out when I can. Ended up with 1 fired 58 and 2 fired 69's, along with part to a old knife and a spoon handle. The spoon handle is interesting. It has REED& BARTON stamped on one side and BENTLEY SPRINGS on the other. REED & BARTON starting being stamped in the 1840's. Does anyone know how to tell if it is Silver?

Use magnification to look closely at the edges. If you see any green patina, it's Silver plate. Anywhere the plating wears off there will be evidence of the base metal; in this case brass. The green patina forms from oxidation and surface leaching of the copper contained in the brass. Nice find John. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
