It sounds like R2D2

Well, today was my first day out with the SE. I have the stock 10" slimline coil, a Sunray X-5, and an Excelerator 4x7. Using factory settings the big coil was constantly making all kind of sounds. The two smaller coils were quieter, and I think the Excelerator was the deeper of the two, but I could be wrong. The machine is so busy making all different tones, it really does sound like R2D2, and I can't seem to separate the targets at all the big coil, and I don't know what I'm hearing with any of the coils. Today I went to three parks that have been hunted to the point that NO ONE hunts anymore. They still have trash, but very few good targets. I found several twist off bottle caps, one new dime and one new penny and some bits of trash.
I am looking forward to going out again and learning more but my excitement level is way down. I wish someone close by was experienced with these machines. I would like to go along with an experienced user and just listen to the sounds and have them explain them. Anyway, I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Are you hunting in All-metal? Sounds like you have too much sensitivity. Try using Auto-sensitivity and see if you still have all those sounds. Also you need to do some air testing or set up a test garden just to get to know the sounds. I hunt with just nail disc out with the standard coil and yes it can give you hearing fatigue but you tend to ignore most after awhile.

TRY Mike Moutray's Explorer Setup .I did and have had great success,Ray-Mo.This is the link http://66.51.97.78/coinist/mikesmtipspage1.html

What happen to me this morning, I put on the big coil and headed out and man was my SE singing like a bird. I was wondering what the heck. SO I went back and put on my Joey Coil and little more quiet, but still singing. Then it hit me, your in AM mode, knuckle head....... So I had a successful day and spent 5 hours hunting. So the bottom-line, check your equipment and go back to the basics.

Hi guys and thanks for all the replies!!! I am in Pensacola Florida. Anybody near me??
I am hunting in the factory presets. I adjusted the Threshold to just audible, and switched the Sens back and forth between Semi-Auto and Man. I also switched back forth between Digital and Smartfind. I am finding in both modes that I get a lot of movement on the Vert Axis of the smart find as well as the Cond set of numbers in the Digital setting, as well as lots of movement in the Horizontal and the ferous numbers. I think that is how the numbers correspond with the Axis in the two differect settings. I am not getting signals that solidly repeat except for the large screw caps. I don't know how you guys are distinguishing deep silver. Or deep anything.
I will try loading in the Moultray settings and stick in one of the User Mem spaces and see how that works tommorrow. Thanks again for the help.

In the factory mode i find more nulling than noise. Unless you are in one heck of a trashy area you shouldnt get as much noise as you are. Have you removed the coil cover to see if there is a lot of dirt? When you hold the coil up and out, say waist high, are you getting a lot of EMI? Also try removing the battery while the detector is operating. Then restart. Lets say you get a signal... when you pinpoint does it show a target under the coil?

Dewcon,
I do get a lot of nulling. A heck of a lot. I never noticed that much with my Spectrum. With the EMI, sometimes yes, sometimes no. I haven't really paid that much attention to EMI, but I did re-Noise Cancel a couple of times because I thought there might be EMI. Pinpointing, it''s funny because about a third of time pinpointed was so dead on and audibly clear that I couldn't see how anyone could have a problem with it. But most of the time the pinpointing wandered around and wouldn't lock on one target, or wouldn't (for deeper targets) give me a solid position for the target, it just kind of wandered with the tone seeming to rise and fall randomly. I'll do the battery thing, and I will load the Moultray settings and I'm off for DAY 2 of "I can Drive a Car and Operate a Computer - Surely I can Operate This Danged Explorer!"

Ray i read Mikes post... but i have to say he confused me when he talked about recovery FAST and DEEP. Did i read it correctly... he uses fast ON and deep ON... except in open areas then he turns fast OFF? Ive hunted with Fast in trashy areas and Deep in open areas but never both on just because the book didnt seem to recommend it. Ive also hunted with both off and it seems to work pretty well.

I run with mine in both deep and fast every where, except for the beach

Yes you can have both on at the same time. I haven't seen any difference in depth in my area with those various settings.

Ok, day two and I started out with the Moultray settings (thanks RayMo, I owe you one buddy) using my 4.5x7 Excelerator coil. Went to the same old park and picked a small area that was shaded by a tree to search. I searched the whole shaded area and the machine was quiet and stable. I bumped up the Sens until it was a little erratic and then backed off to 26 and searched the whole area. Then I switched to the 10"Slimline and found some more stuff, all of it under 6' deep and all clad, plus a little trash. I should have switched to my X-5 before going to the 10", and my next time out I will recheck the area with the X-5 and keep bumping the Sens up until I need to go to the 10". I gotta get an X-8! I was also getting MUCH better at deciphering the tones.

Right here I gotta give props to this group. If not for this group I wouldn't have known to get the two smaller coils. Once I decided I wanted to try the Explorer, I went on eBay and there they were, I bought them both, before I bought my detector. Without the smaller coils I would be screwed. So thanks for being here. I spent weeks staying up past midnight reading several different metal detecting forums to decide which machine I would buy, and in the process I learned about the coils and the X-1 and stuff. This group here on Find's was super influential on my decision. I have found the X-1 a little too sensitive at times. I kind of wish there was a function on the machine whereby you could cut the sensitivity 50% to 75% for using the X-1.

Back to todays hunt. I am learning how the machine reacts to multiple targets, and right now I have to have a small coil and low Sens setting or it all sounds like a drunken Jazz Quartet to me. But with the small coil (I just love the little 4.5x7") it separates so well, but still I have noticed that if there are two or three Penny's together, I get nice solid tone, but with one penny I still get a broken tone. And four quarters stacked in a hole sounds like silver on the emulator program. Man I thought I had silver and was so excited because the tone was crystal clear, and high and bright, and solid and smooth, but it was only four or 5" so I wasn't too let down to see four clad quarters.

A question about the Threshold. My threshold disappears after every target, and sometimes a split second before a good target tone. Is that normal? I can't recall now if my Eagle or Spectrum did that, but I don' think they did.

Thanks again everyone for helping to learn this machine and inspiring patience. I thank you in advance for all the great finds I'm gonna dig with this machine!
Kind regards,
toy4runr

The threshold question, yes, that sounds normal to me, the Explorer is hot off the edges of the coil. Don't be afraid to experiment with your settings to see how they affect the operation of the detector. Generally, good targets have a tigher tone warble than junky items, with wild warbles but digging will help educate you on different tones or series of tones. That thing about the penny giving a broken tone doesn't sound right to me, was that an air test or a penny you dug? Sometimes ground conditions or close by trash can degrade an ideal signal. I think you will find the Explorer is not like other detectors so sometimes it will be hard to go by what detectors you are familiar with, that is especially true with the tone ID system. That description likening to a drunken Jazz Quartet is humorous, hope you have fun learning this excellent detector.
