My older brother Geoff, who is a keen swimmer, has set himself the goal of swimming the English Channel. After spending the last 14 months in training, he took off for England a couple of weeks back for the attempt. Due to strict rules surrounding this swim, by the governing body (for the swim to be officially recognised) Geoff had to commence his swim within 8 days of the date he selected to go. However, due to really bad weather in England, he was only able to commence his swim about an hour ago (9pm English time). This is only 3 hours before the dead line had elapsed! Conditions are still not ideal, but doable. As only 18% of people that attempt this swim, succeed, so it will will no small feat if Geoff succeeds! Only around 750 people have ever succeeded in completing this swim, Which is probably less than those that have climbed Mt Everest!
I'll let you know if he succeeds or not. Go Geoff!!!!!
Mick Evans.

Unfortunately, due to bad cramps, Geoff had to abandon the swim 4 hrs 10 Min's into the swim. As he has swum greater distances in training in open water, he'll be very disappointed. More people have climbed to the top of Mt Everest than have swum the Chanel, so to even try and fail, is of itself, still worth tilting ones hat for sheer tenacity.

Mick, my hat's off to him for even trying. Everything I've read says it's all but impossible. I'm sure he'll try and succeed in the future.

As i am a terrrible swimmer, just never could get it done right, no matter who was tryin to teach me, i can make it to the end of a short pool that's bout it, SSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i say congratulations, that is something to be proud of :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::usaflag:

Thanks all for the kind words.
Getting halfway in those conditions as he did (about 90Min's faster he wanted to to try and beat the change in the tide) was still an outstanding performance!

Takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to even attempt something like that. :clapping: Making it as far as he did is an accomplishment that most of us will never know. HH Randy

Mate he must be made of something better than I was put together with.
I reckon id get about 150 meters off shore and be looking for the nearest thing to grab a hold of and head back in.
Good on him.

He has lots of guts just trying. My hats off to him....
Nice going !!!!
