I understand your thinking Larry. In my case I did take the time to learn the machine. Actually, I spent two years with that MD and spent a small fortune on instructional materials, Yep, I know that a lot of guys want to "turn-on and go" but that wasn't the case with me. I took the time read the manual...joined the forums...ask questions....spent hours and hours in the field...
As an example, my old machine has 198 VDI numbers and 198 corresponding pitches associated with each VDI. When I compare to the At pro (which has three) it's basically eliminating a bunch of unnecessary ( and at times confusing) tones. If you used the pre-set factory programs you lost a lot of depth because the discrimination was set so high. So then you'd increase the AC sensitivity and have to balance that with the pre-amp gain etc. etc. Don't get me wrong... it's a good machine.... and I got better with the adjustments.
Another problem may have been psychological. Like "hey -- I've got all these adjustments so maybe I'd better use them..." Just seemed in the end to be more and more "adjusting..." So maybe I need something that's not quite as complex.
I'm anxious to try this Garrett.... Looking at the L/S down the road, too.
