It finally happened, a silver quarter with the 5x8!!!

I'm still in shock over the whole thing. Step back in time about 2 years when I first bought the 5x8 coil. From day one, I thought it was killer sensitive on small targets, but lacked the depth I was looking for. I never really used it and it collected dust up until a month ago. I was hunting areas I've previously pounded and pounded looking for one last keeper before I wrote the areas off. Some spots were super trashy so I decided to try out the 5x8 coil and see if I could get a few shallow cherries amongst the trash. To my surprise the coil yielded several keepers in an area I was about to write off. Granted I hadn't found silver with it, but Indians, V's and Buff's I'll take any day of the week. Fast forward to tonight. It's 4pm and I'm racing traffic to get to my beloved park. I had a feeling today was going to be a good day. I parked the truck, stuck fresh Alkalines in the machine, got out to hunt and found my first signal. I dug the plug, pressed my ProPointer button and it didn't turn on! I then remembered that I needed a 9-volt in a hurry last night and took out the battery from the ProPointer and never replaced it! My own stupidity and I did the walk of shame back to the now exposed hole. What's this? A stinkin' Lincoln...Hardly worth the ordeal I just went thru! :rage: I stood up and swung the coil again and got another signal about 2 inches away from the Lincoln I just dug. Dug down about 5 inches and was rewarded with a wheat!

About 45 minutes goes by, several trash targets in my pouch and the lone wheat had me move a little further down from where I was hunting. I was hunting near this path that I scored an Indian off of last year and a few wheats and figured maybe something was left. Mind you I hit this area hard a few times in different directions with the 8x11 coil, so I wasn't anticipating much to be found with the 5x8 coil. I slowly gridded back and forth and came across a weak and faint high tone. I was running the machine today in Pro Zero, 0 disc, Iron Audio Off, 2 bars below max sens and GB at 94. I checked the signal from both directions and the numbers were 87, 88, 96, 90, 91. The tone never changed but the numbers were bouncy. I increased the sensitivity by 1 bar and the numbers started getting closer together and the tone improved. I dug a nice wide deep plug, flipped it over and got a weak hit with the ProPointer. I stuck my small hand shovel in the hole and did a nice scoop. Stuck the pointer back in and the signal was loud and clear and sounded big. In the back of my mind I thought silver, but reality kicked in and I dismissed the silver notion with a screw cap instead. I stuck my hand shovel in again and popped out a clot of dirt and seen big silver fly out at me! I love it when that happens! I eagerly grabbed my cellphone and took a few dirty pictures to get the adrenaline going  After I regained composure, I wiped off the front to reveal a nice 38 Washington! First silver quarter I ever found with the 5x8 coil and I couldn't be happier. I stuck my shovel in the hole and it was right about 7 inches deep. Not sure if it was on edge or not, but it literally flew up at me when I pried it loose from its dirty grave. I stuck the propointer back in the hole and there was another large signal, scooped out some more dirt and was rewarded with a dirty wheat. After texting my buddy Ron to kinda rub it in after scorching me out of a half dollar last week, I am back with a vengeance, muahahaha! I gridded the heck out of this area with a few more deep clad coins and nothing else was to be had.

I wandered off to the area I hunted on Saturday where I found my 2nd merc for that day. I decided to hunt this patch of grass nearby that my buddy hunted once before, but has never seen my coil over it. I hunted about 10 feet away from the curb in a straight line for about 20 feet. I try to do this to get an idea of how well the area was hit by previous hunters. They did pretty good, but not good enough. I slowly swung back and forth and came across an iffy at 6". The numbers bounced a bit from 79 - 84 and I saw 83 pop up a few times. I dug a nice deep plug. Stuck the propointer in the hole and it didn't make a peep. I ran it over the plug and it gave off a loud signal. I scraped away some of the dirt with the pointer and seen the edge of silver! I grabbed my phone to realize the battery died while I was hunting. I cursed my addiction to Clash of Clans who is definitely to blame for draining my android battery and had a few choice words to say about not charging the phone or bringing the GoPro with me for that matter!!! Anyways, I calmed down and revealed a nice 1919-D merc in pretty good shape. I re-checked the hole and nothing else was there. I decided to do a 4x8 grid directly where I found the merc and was rewarded with 3 other wheats for my effort. I decided to end the hunt then and there because the mosquitos were starting to come out and I was getting pretty thirsty. I will definitely be going back to this spot for a more thorough grid search.

The Good Luck token was found in the 4x8 area I gridded, the pin appears to be military related. Underneath are 2 rifles crossing each other so that is why I think its military. Managed a decent fob which is always a treat, a 1992 1 Peso coin, a junk signet ring with the letter "P", small unidentified button and 5 wheats for the day. Managed 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 14 pennies for $0.59 in clad. Thanks for reading and HH!

Nice hunt and congrats on the silver coins! The crossed rifles insignia is a Marine Corps E-3 emblem - looks like a good spot!

Nice score bud. :detecting: After a few you almost know instantly by the numbers etc. that you likely have a silver quarter. They begin to stand out.

Nice story accounting of an outing. The ups and downs could be any one of us at any given time. And for park hunting which are generally trash laden, small coils can be a game changer. Nice silver and wheat cent day. HH jim tn

Excellent hunting and write up! :clapping: I've been trying to make due running big coils on my rigs, but this is a great testimony to giving the little one a shot...most of the guys here that find silver like that in a place like that use those small coils I've noticed..:please:.

I have found so much that I have missed with the larger coils in trashy areas. That 5x8 is killer! It has great depth for such a small coil. Thing just nabbed a SLQ for me among iron. I make it a point to grid out trashy areas with that coil now. I get kind of excited at trashy areas now, b/se I know treasure is hiding there and that most hunters are not patient enough. congrats!
