maybe the good people of this site can relate to what im about to say...i can easily remember a time when we detectorists were thought to be kooky with a humbug, lucifer driven stick with a box on it machine that magically summoned metallic objects from the ground. harmless enough. through it all, i can remember not covering a hole or two due only to the lust and excitement of the chase. like many others nowadays, all i can do when i hear about further restrictions being levied on our chosen hobby is to bow my head and voice my dissent. it takes only the mis- actions of the very few to screw it up for everybody. it seems to have caught up with all of us, no matter how innocent of trespass we may be. it seems we are all held accountable for the actions of the very few, and thats just wrong.

this is true in more than metal detecting.

We all are judged by the actions of a few, usally the bad actions of a few:thumbdown:

Many a hunter has lost permission to hunt due to gates left open, livestock killed, pets killed, etc.
Many a fisherman has lost access to private ponds due to trespassers, overfishing, trash, etc.
We are just one more example of people being judged by the few who screw it up for everybody else. Our only redemption is to be good stewards of our hobby. Treat everyones property with the same respect you would treat your own. Get permission, fill all holes, remove any trash found, offer to share finds with the land owner, and be sure to thank the one giving you permission to hunt on his land. Become friends not just users. No one likes to be used and taken advantage of by strangers. These are all simple things to do that will open many doors for those of us who appreciate everything our hobby has to offer. Be a friend FIRST and the rest will come in time.
Remember, whatever you do, your actions reflect on every good person who has metal detecting as a hobby.

HAHAHAHAH..I remember once out detecting a guy asked if I needed a few bucks for eating..LOL he thought I was a vagrant !!!
After I explained what I was doing..he asked what a machine cost..he gulped and said " Wish I could afford one of those"..he shook his head and walked away..
