I retired on February 1st this year, at the young age of 62, and I thought I had made arrangements to have something to do almost everyday, for the rest of my days. In November of last year I bought my RV travel trailer and used it for both Bear, Deer, and small game seasons. Then came February and I ended up just looking out the window at all the Snow here in Western PA. I love to hunt, fish and camp but until I have a travel companion (wife still working, only 59) I thought okay, if I'm to be by myself so much and if I wanted to get outdoors and away from house chores (the honey-do list) I had better add to my plan just a bit more. Then it hit me. I NEED TO GET ME BH 505 Pro. From this web site and several Manufacturer's site's, I did enough research, that I feel this was the best bang for my buck. I understand it to be a great MD for those of us just getting started. My UPS tracking has it at my door on Monday morning...people I am EXCITED. Thanks to all of you out here, I think I know alot about the machine I have purchased and the kind of individual it takes to stay at it this thing you call MDing. I owned a machine (not sure who's) way back in the early 70's and I can only assume that the Tech has come along way since then..I hope. Back then, pull tabs were the new way of opening things and as I recall ,my machine hit tab, after tab, after tab. I can't remember finding anything else?? After reading all about the finds here and other places, I'm sure I'll do much better. I do have a question though you all can help me with and it's about "sounds"? I am a little hard of hearing these days and I am wondering about the use of the ear phones. Do most of you wear the headphones? and is it beaus of tones? I have one dull ear and one good one so I think if I can just turn up the volume a little, everything should be okay? Squelch was a big problem in the old days? Is that a thing of the past? Well I'll keep this as my number #1 site and you can expect to hear from me again I'm sure. Thanks to all of you for being out here and your help so far. PS, the snow has melted and my first location will be the sledding hill just two blocks away. I've watched people sled there for 30years but I have never seen anyone MD the hill???

Headphones will definitely be of help plus extend battery life.
Make sure you don't skimp on the headphones get some with a high omhs number.
I bought Sunray Pro Golds for this season have one ear that's not that good either
These earphone are individually adjusted

Opps. Thanks for the tip Joel, however my total package from KellyCo includes some ear phones. I'll just hope they are adjustable by ear? If not perhaps I'll look into another pair I guess.

The Ohms number does NOT make the headphones better...That number is for impedence matching purposes...Get 8 ohm headphones with a 1/4" plug...

HH,

The three-tone Discrimination mode of the BH detectors does not have much nuance of tone. Once the signal is strong enough to be detected, it gives pretty much the same tone as a very strong signal. Low/Medium/High frequencies pertain to the relative conductivity of the signal. Iron, gold, nickles and foil are low, pulltabs and copper in the middle, silver is high.

All-Metal mode will have a volume that relates to target size or proximity. Faint audio response is possible in this mode and may mean a small target close to the coil or something larger and deeper. No matter what the metal, the tone's frequency will be the same, only the volume changes in this mode.

Obviously, headphones will help more in All-Metal than in Discrimination. But. if you have trouble hearing the loudspeaker in a noisy or windy environment, they'll help you hear and focus your concentration. Do be aware of your surroundings. With headphones on, you can ignore or not hear something happening around you that might be important. Such as a snake in the wilds or a kid on a bike out of control coming at you in a park.

It's also easy to cause further hearing damage by excessive headphone volume, so be aware of that as well.

All this "nanny-preach" aside, headphones are a definite advantage.

Headphone with higher impedance/Ohms rating will not draw as much current as lower Ohms, and will tend to not play as loudly, but with so many other variables as to quality and fit in play, this is somewhat misleading. They may provide a "cleaner" tone. It's a matter of personal preference, what is most comfortable to wear for long periods and not totally block external sound would be a good choice. The "freebie" 'phones that come with a detector will generally be on the lower end of the pecking order.
