It Ain't Nothin' But A "Thing"!

The Thing, to be exact! :D

Well, I did it...hit the surflane hard and heavy from midnight to 5 AM. Now it's time to wash up, get some grub, and go to work. Didn't get a repeat of yesterday's hunt, but the mighty Excalibur was in fine trim none-the-less and I did manage a nice little ring. I did enough traipsing up and down the wet sand and digging to halfway to China to last me until next weekend, I think.

Ran into Roger and Jim from Ohio, hitting it hard. Save some for me, huh? Also ran into Joe for the second night in a row, with his Headhunter...working it hard. Saw one or two others in the distance.

traipse (tr?ps) v., traipsed, traips

I was waiting for somebody to ask. :D

I had such high hopes for the ring...in the early morning light I couldn't tell. It looked good. Roger and Jim were sure it was a real diamond and, unable to make out the marking, I thought it might be Platinum. I was fairly sure it wasn't gold because of the tone...it sounded like a zinc to a dime, somewhere in between. Turns out it's stamped 925, so it's silver. And I doubt they would put a real diamond in a silver ring. But it's still a nice looking ring and as it turns out, my wife likes gold and my daughter likes silver and she likes the ring. So there we go...

Good luck out there. I think I've pretty much shot my wad until Friday. Remember...try as they might, Roger and Jim can't hunt the WHOLE beach.

Sounds and appears that you had a "fun" night! "Cool" finds! Don't know how you can hunt for 5 hours, then go put in a day's work though..... Guess it's an "age thing"!

Been wondering something and figure this is a good time to ask (feel I'll be helping you stay awake). It appears, by the pics that GraveDiggerMax posts of the "spin down the lane", that VA Beach is much wider than it was years ago when I was spending time there. Was it replenished in the last 10 years or so? Also note that it seems flat for a great distance, then drops relatively fast from the high tide mark to the low tide mark and beyond..... true? The beach down here has about 50 yards of dry sand before the high tide mark, then drops very slowly from there. I would guess 200 yards (at least) from the high tide mark to the low tide mark.

Just wondering?????

Yes, much to our dismay they added about 300 yards of sand to the beach over the last several years, probably covering up forever (Well, NOTHING is forever, right?) a lot of good finds. On the other hand, more area to pack in more tourists and more drops the result. But the lay of the beach is, as you say, kinda weird. And to make matters worse, they are constantly pumping dredge from the nearby inlet, redirecting it back to the beach. So we spend a lot of time "Sanded in", which creates the conditions you mentioned. And yet, we still do ok. But after a good storm things get real interesting. After Isabel it was crazy. Even found some silver, which is rare here.

As for going to work, the 4th comes once a year. I couldn't take off today, so had to say the heck with it. I'm tired but ok. If 46 is young we can chalk it up to that but I'm thinking it's mostly the coffee and a little bit of dumbass getting me through.

If you are 46 and roller blade, then you are in great shape! And yes, 46 is young!

The beach down here was replenished about 7 years ago. Nothing real old being found.

What is interesting is that all the beach crowd go to a relatively narrow area to release the treasures into the water up there! That is good (I would think). 200+ yards of wet (okay, some only damp after the first few hour of the outgoing tide) down here provides them with a bunch more area to make their deposits during the day. I would think the limited "depository" is a BIG plus to detecting? Looking forward to viewing your finds from tonight's 5 hours!:sleepy::):)

Mike,

So you must be the one Gator (Max) is complaining, I mean talking about all the time. Between all the mumbles about sucking up all the good stuff he has good things to say about you.

Nice finds. Love the Hulk and the ring ain't bad either.

Heh...there won't be any 5 hours tonight. There may be about 10 hours of detecting the insides of my eyelids.

As for a limited repository, there are two ways to look at that. Yeah, a whole lot easier to hunt. But a whole lot easier to clean out too, if you have a bunch of folks that hit it regularly. The good thing about our HUGE area...which is what you see in the pictures WIDE and 40 lengthy blocks LONG. There is no way anybody can hunt it all and from one day to the next a "skunk" spot can turn into a bonanza and vice versa. So it's a real "equal opportunity" beach. If you put in the time, you'll hit the good stuff when it's your turn.

LOL, and the gold always seems to be where you buddies coil is.

Heck, his grumbling is done with the utmost respect, trust me. I have always found it fun to compete with whomever I run into on the beach. I am getting to know many of them better. Some are happy to talk to you, others go out of their way to avoid you. So be it. I am the talkie type and love seing someone else's finds almost as much as seeing my own. I tell myself "If they can find it, then you can too." And I have been more finding as I get to know my detector better.

Oh, I know Max is just jesting. In fact, last summer when I ran into Roger and Jim from Ohio the first night they were here (they come every year and clean house) I asked them "didn't that have a plane to catch?" But it's all in fun and a little competition to see who can get down there and make the good finds first is always healthy and fun.

But you're right also about some of the "negative nellies" in the hobby. We have a couple of those I've run into from time to time that looked downright pissed that they have to share the beach with you and you'd think it would kill them to even give you a "nod" and crack a polite smile, even if they ARE thinking "Yeah, keep moving you son of a..." I think if you aren't having fun you should be doing it. I had one of thse guys that I practically forced to talk to me one night after seeing him for the umpteenth time and when we got to the "So what have you found...?" part, I had a silver ring, a gold, and some clad and he's like "That's pretty common stuff around here...if I don't go home with 3 or 4 nice rings at the end of the night, I'm ticked."

Well I wish I always got 3 or 4 rings. Truth is, that's pretty darn rare and I've been skunked MANY a time. If I used that criteria, I be one unhappy puppy. Oh sure, I LOVE finding the good stuff. But to me, it's awful nice just to be out in the beautiful cool breeze and night air, by the water's edge, barefoot in the wet sand and cruising along doing what I love. And if all I find is about $1.60 in change and a few pulltabs (which is about what I got on Friday night!) then oh well. I'll be back to grab the brass ring another day. :) HH!

Amen on the 3-4 rings. Have a few around here that feel let down if they do not come away with 3-4 gold rings or such. Heck, I had a 4 ring day a few weeks ago and could not stop smiling. It was an overcast dank day and my hunting buddy said he was not going cause no one had been to the beach in awhile. Well, 3 silver and a gold ring were something and I got braggin rights with him for some time.

Oh, I am the pull-tab king. I can usually identify them now but for some reason, just have to dig them. Got 148 one night in about 3 hours. Mostly dry sand as tide was way in.

Well, good meeting you Mike. Hope to see you around on the forum.

Holy cow! 148 pulltabs in one night? I'm glad we don't have that many around here. Because even though I can tell them on my Excal most of the time, I dig 'em too. They're just too close to some gold rings. When I went to South Beach in Miami with my sister and some friends of hers I thought if I never saw another pulltab again that would be fine with me. Unreal...

HH!

Here is a picture of a pretty typical day in the dry sand. And I don't think I kept all the pull tabs. Note the gold one in there.
