It’s time for you to get in on a ‘planted’ Ghost Town Hunt! Two opportunities!

Well-known member
That’s right, we have two upcoming “Welcome-to-Hunt Outings” anyone is invited to participate in.

Eastern Oregon
August 1st & 2nd

One Ghost Town site, Malheur City, was a prosperous mining town as early as 1863, and a search of a nearby other possible location that pre-dated Malheur City.
Closest town with a motel, gas and grub would be Baker City

Contact Gregg Zehr at: greggzehr@yahoo.com
He will guide folks into the locations starting at a point about 20 minutes from Baker City off I-84. It will be an easy dirt/gravel road drive for maybe 30 minutes from there.

Eastern Nevada
September 9th thru 13th

Our ‘base camp’, so to speak, will be Montello, Nevada where there is a small motel and RV area, or folks are welcome to camp at one of the three Ghost Town sites we will be hunting. The closest (Tecoma) is maybe a 10 minute drive north from Montello, which does have a gas station and a cafe, and the other two towns (Toano and Cobre) are not much more of a drive to the south. If you want to stay in a little bit larger town with several casinos w/buffets, that also has other motels, places to eat, gas stations and a nice store for grub, tha'st about an extra 30 minute drive from the closest Ghost Town.

This Outing has three old Ghost Town sites dating back to 1868, 1869 and about 1905. These were the sites we hunted on our May “Welcome-to-Hunt Outing” and we had 17 people in attendance. No, not everyone made fantastic finds, but many did and everyone had an equal opportunity to work their coil over a target and dig. Some finds were quite impressive, both as old US coins as well as some interesting artifacts of the period. Military and other buttons, suspender buckles, bullet molds, thimbles, bullets and cartridge cases, … and the list goes on.

If you’re interested in this open invitation outing, feel welcome to contact Monte or Oregon Gregg.

We can also direct you to a site to view comments and photos of recoveries from our May Outing.

Oh, by now you’re surely wondering what I meant by a ‘planted’ Outing in Eastern Oregon and Eastern Nevada. Well, it’s really a simple answer and it calls for everyone who attended to ‘plant their feet’ in these nice old towns and give them a patient and dedicated search. Yep, just come and ‘plant you feet, and don’t forget to bring along a good detector or two for the challenges you’ll face, and a smaller-than-stock search coil would be helpful, too.

Keep your Discrimination low, use a slow and methodical sweep speed, ignore a lot of fluff such as visual Target ID, and be prepared to “dig what beeps!” Then take a look and you’ll know of it is a keeper of junk.

Gregg & I have had our rooms reserved at the Pilot Motel in Montello, and currently we might have between 8 and 12 people who have committed to participate. Maybe all five days or some only the Friday thru Sunday, but it wouldn’t surprise us if we match or better the ‘17’ person attendance we had in May.

In the meantime, get out hunting. Learn your detectors well, Pick some trashier sites to hunt, and let either or both of us know if you’re interested in attending one or both of these open outings.

Did you tell them to be prepared for rattlesnakes, high grass/weeds & Aug. heat at MC?----That's what you are faced with up there at this time of year.----A trip like that is best planned in early Spring before the seasonal growth sets in, snakes come out---and the heat sets in.------Just a pre-warning to go prepared----and there is NO shortage of rattlers up there---my wife & I both can vouch for that!--------Del from Baker City

Snakes are cool, a guy always needs a hatband with a good back story...plus the Perseids should be firing up soon...an adventure in the making...

"Snakes are cool" you say do ya!-----Not with Monte they aren't--he hates 'em all & kills every snake he gets a chance to.---Says a rattler chased him down a hill as a kid--maybe that ended his love affair with snakes before it got started! ;)------My wifes dad used to milk them for their vennum & sell it to hospitals in the old days.--------Del

I assume you have to take precautions when these rattler snakes are around ??? if so how do you prevent them attacking you or what ever they do.

Aw, rattlers don't "attack"---they just don't want to be cornered or surprised.----Precautions?---Boots & snake chaps---when in a rattlesnake area--move slow & make noise---keep that detector coil swinging out in front of you.-----Why kill them???----It's us that are in their area--not vice versa----they gotta live somewhere.

Ain't no way I will ever be milking a rattler______ and I do have to agree with Mr. Monte..The only good snake is a dead snake...

Shoot, come to think about it..... "I'm not detecting" where rattles are, and they can keep their land and area too ..... No Problem !!

You must be from Cincinnati, Elton!

LOL must be ............... cause they ain't no snakes "ceptin" the two legged types where I detect.. hahahhahahahahaha

at least they don't lay coiled up waitin to nail you ... they just sneak up if ya ain't watchin.... :)

I have never had a welcome encounter with ANY snake, out in the sticks or slithering in our yard in town ... on MY turf!

They don't pay the taxes to be on land where I want to recreate. I hate them, and have for the past 60 years or so.

I guess snake lovers could come out and round-them-up and, if they gotta live somewhere, send them to Cincinnati.

Now you let those snakes be!!!-----I pay good money (taxes) to let them have a place to live (natural habitat)! ;)-----I like 'em and have for the last 76 years or so!----HOWEVER---I guess we could spare six or eight of 'em if you want to round them up & send them to Elton in Cincinnati!------Kiddin ya Monte---if I didn't do this you would think I didn't like ya!------Stop in BC & see us for another visit--we can discuss the fine attributes of our reptile friends.----Your young yet--once you see how great our slithering friends are--you to can become a "snake lover"---it's not too late, no sir!:rofl:---------Del

Detecting for over 50 years. Ghost Town Hunting, avidly, for over 46 years, working places in Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. In 46 years of hunting GT's and other old sites in 'likely snake country,' I can only recall maybe 8 time, maybe only six or seven, but possibly eight, where I have encountered a snake/s at the old sites I searched.

From '83 to about '99 I would hunt many of these sites often, some periods it could be a jaunt every five-to-ten days, and sometimes those trips would be a camp-out to hunt for two days and a night or three days and two nights, winter, spring, summer and fall. At the locations, when actively hunting, I am very alert for snakes, but very seldom have encountered them, and that's fine with me.

On May 4th of '69, my brother & I encountered what appeared to be a 'herd of rattlers,' some rather large, crossing the dirt and gravel road early one morning, about 15 miles from a northern Utah ghost town, and moving into the large rock outcropping. I have never seen so many snakes, and hope never to again, but that was driving to my favorite ghost town, not in any of the towns I searched. As for the first outing towns mentioned, Oregon Gregg has hunted and scouted there and I joined him on one trip a month ago. In the times he's been there, only one bull snake was spotted. He just spent a day at one site, hiking through the brush, in the rocks and ravine, to locate the actual location of the first town folks can hunt, and no snakes were seen.

As for the second outing in September, with three towns involved, I am sure there might be a snake around the country somewhere, but ... In May we had an outing with 17 people in attendance, most stayed for 3 or 4 days, some a 5th before heading home, and I didn't hear anyone speak of seeing a snake or any kind. Also, as others have mentioned, they are seldom encountered and likely don't like us around them, either. Working the search coil and keeping a watchful eye is usually all that's needed to keep us alert while spooking any slithery critter away.

Thus, based on plenty of experience working in and around typically described "snake country," I don't think anyone has anything to be concerned about.

No..Nothing to worry about at all...more people get bit by sharks than snakes...
Cutters made a fortune selling those 'snake bite' kits though...every Boyscout and outdoorsman bought one! fear sells!..:lmfao:..to even see a nice big rattler or a shark for that matter is a once in a lifetime deal for most people....
I think the off chance of encountering a nice big rattler big around as a motorcycle tire would add to the adventure!...plus, snakes are deaf and have no arms or legs...so everybody should feel a bit sorry for them....most snakebites happen when alcohol is involved, and those are generally by little copperheads..snakes are the least of your worries...big bull snakes are very cool!...they settle right down after the initial excitement of capture and you can play with them...hell, all snakes are in a great decline across the Country, its a real chore to even go and find a Garter snake now a days...for a big snake, cottonmouths are really fast though, a guy should not mess with them...but a heavy old rattler buzzing like a cell phone is nothing to worry about...
Mud.

In all the time that I have hiked/detected around Eastern Oregon and Owyhee County in Idaho I have come across Rattlers once back in Aug. 2010. Took the dogs and we hiked down into a canyon to get to Jordan Creek to do some fishing and I blundered in to a small den of them. I think there was 5 total. After realizing I stumbled into a mess of them. I stopped, hollered at the dogs to sit and looked around to see where each snake was. Then I eased the camera out of my backpack snapped a few pics and slowly backed out. As D&P said, they will for the most part try to avoid you , unless you literally step on them or corner them etc.

Good thing Monte wasn't there, the whole damn county would have been shot up LOL

How anyone can go around shooting harmless little snakes is beyond me  what harm do they do  poor little things :)
