Issue with my ATP!

My first ATP had a mechanical problem with the headset. I sent it in and they gave me a new unit. These were both the upgraded units. It worked flawlessly and I immediately found wheaties, Silver, clad, and a gold ring I just had appraised at $700. Due to a shoulder issue, I was unable to hunt for a couple weeks. Today, I made it out, only to find the ATP acting up. It showed full battery but it wouldn't pinpoint at all! It also had a few times where it just wouldn't detect anything or I would get the belltone's and no VDI reading. I tried different modes and sensitivty as well! I even tried F1 thru F4I changed out the batteries tonight but haven't had a chance to see if that made a difference. Anyone else had this issue? THX!

The AT Pro is able to detect metal beyond its ability to identify via VDI #'s. Since I am hearing you say belltones I know you're in Standard mode. I don't use it (Standard) but if you're in Pro Mode Zero you get tones and NO VDI #''s all the time if the metal object is really deep. I would assume the same would happen in Standard mode too. I haven't used the detector's pinpointer a dozen times since I've had it so can't offer any advice there.
I would make sure the connections are tight, and the batteries are good. I would then turn the detector on, then hold down the turn off button until you hear the double beeps that tells you the detector is back to the factory settings.

I would then throw down a quarter in some clean ground and see what you get before I got too excited.

One of the times mine messed up I had to rub a quarter on the coil to get a squeak at full sens. One moment it worked better than any machine I used then the next moment nothing.

[size=large]lets not forget the headphone connector. just saying. seems everyone is talking coil connection and inside workings. so check all connections.

To clarify if your in pro mode you don't see VDI numbers?

I plan on getting a Pro soon

Howard:
You WILL get a visual display of numbers no matter what mode you're in.........Pro....or Standard UNLESS the object being detected is out of range of the VDI.
The AT Pro is able to detect beyond the capabilities of the VDI......so its possible to hear faint subtle squawks, (low tone) growls (mid tones) and beeps (high tones) without any VDI numbers being displayed.

It would be like going 150 mph but the speedometer only registers 120..........

Both coil and hdphone connectors should be checked. When I put mine together I had a little trouble getting the O ring on the coil cable connector to go into the unit. Took my time and worked the O ring into the connector. I think if I hadn`t caught the problem, it could have prevented the connector from going all the way into the unit. Just my experience.

don't use pliers to tighten.
connect.. screw down- wiggle connection in further and screw down... repeat till you feel it is fully seated.

Mine was working fine for the last 9 months with no problems...went on a hunt today deep in the woods and it failed to ground balance, would not pin point (just a hum) and, lost depth to about two inches. After calling Garrett, I was told to send it in for repairs. I wanted the upgrade anyway...But i wish it was on my terms.

I know when my ATP batteries get low, the detector does some weird things. When batteries are less than 1/2 I replace them and that fixes the problem.
