islands

but never made the trek. I've often wondered if it's "off limits" to hunt out there though - with all the "beautiful people" living out there, I bet they have laws against it.

Not sure though - if you're gonna make a road trip out there sometime though and don't mind some company, let me know.

[size=medium]I was just there a few weeks ago but didn't do any detecting. Practically raised there when I was a kid, but things have changed. You should be able to detect but be careful of the 'protected' areas that are owned by the native Indians. You may need to get special permission.

The other thing is that most of the beaches are private property. State law says that the property is private up to the water line. So if you were to be detecting IN the water you would be OK. The problem here is trying to get in the water without going through someone's property.

I only know of a couple of beaches off hand. One is at the docks at Vineyard Haven where the ferries come in and the other is out at Gay Head Cliffs, in an area now known by its Indian name as Aquinnah. Just below the cliffs is a nude beach, so if you go there, don't be surprised. There is a public beach to the south of the nude beach that you could check out. Other than that you'd have to get a local to give you more help.

I still have relatives there, but it's getting so expensive that even the locals can't afford it. The town puts a tax on just about everything except the air you breath.

Just a side note. A few days before we arrived on the island a couple of kids had just set a record of WALKING THE BEACH AROUND THE ISLAND. It took them two days to do it. The distance was 54 miles AND for some reason is ILLEGAL to do there. They had to do most of it under cover of darkness so they wouldn't be seen. I guess they had someone else in a boat near by when they were going around in the event anything happened. For the two days they lived off peanut butter sandwiches.
