Is This Some Sort of Old Spiggot?

Erik

New member
Hi, Found this yesterday near an older home site. Looks to be some sort of spiggot. Can anyone ID it or provide the timeframe that it is from? The odd thing about it is that there is a little hollow plug (made of copper I think) that was still inserted in the nozzle and I was able to pull it out by hand. I'm not sure what this little plug is for and how it was ever held in place being that it was so easy for me to remove it and it pulls all the way out. Thanks for any info on this one. Also notice some of the silver colored plating that still exists.

Hi again Jim!! Thanks for the ID - do you happen to know what timeframe this style may have been used in? Also what does the little hollow (copper?) removable plug do? Thanks, Erik

I honestly can't date it Eric. I do know that it appears much crueder than the ones i dig around here and mine are mostly 18th cent.I used to have a link to a good website to identify and date them. If i can find it i'll git it to you.
The little (copper?) thing appears to me to be a brass shell casing, rimfire?.Was it stuck in the mouth of the spigot or something ? Is there a small squarish indentation neat or at the edge of it ?

Hi Jim! Thanks for the lightning quick reply. Yes it was stuck in the mouth of the spiggot and there is a little rectanguar dent near the rim. There is also what appears to be a "U" on the base. I'll post a pic in a few minutes......Best, Erik (in NJ)

Notice the rectangular indentation at the 9 o'clock position. If you happen to find that link on taps PLEASE pass it along. Best, Erik

it appears to be .38 but can't know whithout a measurement. I'm still lookin for the link for the spigots bud.

Hi Jim, Though the casing is somewhat crushed, the diameter of the base is a little bigger than 3/8". The total length is approx. 1/2".

Best Regards, Erik

That's about right Eric, the outside diameter of the case itself should mike about .342 i think , it's been awhile, can't recall exactly. Not a real old cartrige tho.20th. cent. S&W most likely. The case was made by Union metalic.
