Is this some kind of horse thing?

I'd say for some sort of McCllean saddle, but I believe one of the warly whitney's or Grimsleys (pretty sure not that)...at any rate it is definately part of an old saddle. I have found the standard McClleans' and none are exact to your piece...but close. Good luck with your research and hope I steered you in the right direction.

I really don't know much about it, but I have just come up with an idea. This week end I will be in the neighborhood of an Amish friend of mine. He runs a harness shop. I'll show him the piece.
 
bell holder. The bells hung off the studs. He tried to show me how it attached to the horses rigging. All the rigging was hanging up and I couldn't get the picture. He was more excited about the bells and wanted to know where they were.
