Is this Normal? False signals and only picking up one way...

Hello all,

I am a new AT Pro owner and new to detecting as a whole. I've used the AT Pro a few times now and am unsure if my lack of skill or a possible defect is leading to my confusion. I'll try to describe the symptoms as best as I can:

While using STD Coin mode I will swing the detector and get the "coin" noise. I will then try to reswing over the area to obtain a repeatable signal but more often than not I never hear the signal again or if I do its random and I cant get it to repeat consistently. Also sometimes I can get a signal to repeat but I have to move the detector over it from right to left. If I move it left to right it wont sound.

Additionally, pin point mode does not appear to be functioning all the time. Sometimes if I press pin point it will remain silent and if I try again a couple times it works.

These issues also seem to happen in Pro Mode. I have ground balanced as well. I have not done any discriminating, maybe that's my problem?

Thanks all for any advice!

Try throwing some coins in the grass and get used to finding them with the detector. You should get solid two way signals on valid targets. If the sensitivity is all the way up, try turning the sensitivity down a few bars.

Hi, (1) You must be picking your coil up on each end of your swings....(2) Recheck your ground balance....(3)Sounds like it's iron falsing especially if it's short little high tones.... Report back with your results....JJ

Sometimes when a coin is not positioned horizontally to the coil, it will sound off good one way and not the other. You will get the same effect if there is another coin or other metallic piece of junk beside it. Perfectly normal, and it should be further investigated. :)
