is this guy making the are test right, or thats the real depth of mxt ?

In very mild ground, that might be realistic but the mineralization of your ground and it's intensity will make a big difference as well as what kind of coil design used in your ground. Also the speed of how fast the coil is passing over the target is a factor as well as using headphones will allow you to hear fainter signals than the speaker only. Lots of factors affects why air testing is not a good representative of how it will work for you in your ground and hunting style.

Richigold, Larry is spot on there, If I was doing that test I would have sat the detector on the floor and had the coil at 90* to the floor and use a wooden meter Rule/yard stick( 3ft Ruler )
One of the best things I have seen is a frame with a cradle to hold the detector and 1" markers all along a shaft with a piece of wood that you swung to and fro,
These tests are more likely to give you and Idea of the coils detection field shape, which is always handy to know, and for doing sensitivity test,

Happy Hunting

He's probably close on the air test with a penny. When I air tested and ground tested my 10" x 6" coil, I sold it. It was not that good at all. I didn't test the others that he did, but I did test the 10"DD and the 5.3" coils. The 5.3" would get a penny to about 9 inches. The 10"DD was deeper but I don't remember the numbers. The 10"DD was so much deeper than all the others on the air test and ground test that I use it exclusively for all relic and very old house hunting. I do remember the air test on a belt plate. With the 10"DD it was an incredible 21 inches for good tone and correct VDI. I use other coils for other purposes. The 5.3" for trashy areas and the 3" x 20" Big Dawg for soccer fields and the beach. Each person should run their own tests just so they know the capabilities of their machine. It will make you a better at detecting. The MXT rocks, and it has a great coil selection.

Thanks JohninNC for your input, I have'nt had a chance to have a go with that 10DD but I might go and have a look and see about getting one

my air test with the 6x10DD and a quarter is about 9.5 inches, quite good for a DD coil that size. I'm looking to buy a 10DD though

when doing air tests, don't forget to lock the GB before switching ON your MXT
