Is this fossilised dinosaur skin?

It measures around about 2" square and 1/2" thick and weighs 2oz so not lead - not magnetic - for its size it appeared on the very bottom of my Explorer screen not top right where the hot rocks hit - it's been called everything from casting waste to composite material - then someone said it was a fossil - :help:

I wouldnt be surprised if it was skin, that looks like it was something alive at sometime. Keep us posted, CO

It actualy does resemble the skin of a beaded lizzard.
Maybe it was shot and killed and you picked up the lead or copper in it.

Well that's a possibility apart from.
1. its made of rock
2. there's no bearded lizards here on the East Coast of England :wiggle: :ukflag:

There are some different samples of dino skin for sale on e bay, at least you can see there are a number of different textural and shape things going on. Of course In a sense when petrified they are rock like, the minerals, ores etc replace the organic stuff. By two ounces are you saying it feels quite lite? CO

I would really like to know what that one is.

Could be aged ivory. If thats the case, it might be part of an ivory statue.

I hate to burst your bubble...

I think that is a melted sneaker. The metal your detector sees are the eyelets imbedded into the plastic. The pattern of the "scales" looks somewhat artificial.

2oz for a rock that is half the size of you hand/fingers? Does it float or nearly float? Can you slice off a bit with a knife. Can you cut through it? Will it burn or melt?

I am a geologist and that does not look like a rock but what do I know? I would try the melt test first, slice a sliver off and burn it.

Melt testing can be done with a hot needle. If it doesn't melt, no harm done. If it melts, you can be discreet where you test it. But he said he doesn't have it now to do any tests. I agree, it looks melted into shape, or out of shape. :)

Well to put you out your misery here's what the experts say - not convinced my self as the field it was found in has been grass for 300 years.

Will maybe attempt some of the tests quoted here

Take it to a outpatincr hav the do a mri are cat if you tell what it id they might help you

lol, MRI cost can range between $400 to $3,500 depending upon which MRI procuedure is performed. Maybe they'll cut you a deal and charge half price at $200.
CAT scan procedure costs can range between $270 and $4,800 so that may be the cheaper route.

On a side note, I learned a new word! "Clayey" HEHE
