Is this Civil War era?

I'm really new to relic hunting. So new I believed this buckle to be a kids belt buckle. But I saw some old Civil war knapsack buckles had hearts on them. Do you think this buckle is one of those?

Its commonly listed as a Civil War period harness or halter buckle. However, they were used well into the 20th century. Great find!

I've seen these refereed to as bed roll buckles and Horse tack buckles etc. But what I've come to learn is they are buckle covers. This ornamental piece would cover a bridle buckle to prevent branches from getting hung up in the buckle anytime the Horse was in dense brush or woods. Ken Knopp's book on Horse equipment and tack probably has references to this. I've seen them in plain and bullseye patterns as well as the heart. GH, David@Dixie
