is this an Ace 250 glitch???

While cleaning the clad I found today I noticed there were no nickles.
I toss my coins in a jar after each trip so I dumped them out and discovered there were 94 coins yet only 4 of them were nickles.
Seems that nickles and pennies should make up the majority of the finds as they (theoretically) are the most produced coins here in the states.
I have been using different disc settings on my hunts as I am learning the machine so I really don't think I should be avoiding nickles so blatantly.
What is your view on the Ace and nickles????

Nope :) ....... Nickels are usually the least. Nickels read as pulltabs. Pennies read up higher on the scale along with quarters. The ACE you have is working fine

That's one area I want to become more proficient in. I will dig a certain number if pulltab hits, in hopes of a nickle, or better yet jewelry, but most of the time it's trash. I think you'll find most recover a lesser amount of nickles for the same reason. I actually intend to "dig more trash" in the future, not intentionally, but in an effort to raise my % of nickles & rings.

All metal detectors have the same "glitch". If you aren't finding tab tops it is very unlikely you will find gold. More trash is a GOOD thing if you want gold. Keep diggin and enjoy the fruits of your hobby.

My nickels read hard on nickel. If I am in highly mineralized ground it will bounce from nickel to foil. Many times square tabs will hit on nickel. They also tend to bounce from nickel to one notch higher. I love a solid nickel hit, it's my favorite. It is usually one of four things. Nickel, sq. tab, metal from a pencil eraser or a gold ring.

One of my personal goals this year was to dig more nickels. This year I dug more than any previous year. I am not tallying until after my last hunt of the year. I have yet to hit on any gold, ever. I am not surprised as I do not do any park or beach hunting. As said in an earlier post, nickels tend to hit right on nickel, or occasionally one tick above.

Pencil eraser.......? I thought I was the only getting those lil buggers.

The more practice you get the more nickels you will dig. I judge a days hunt by how many nickels I find. If nickels are around 10-20 percent of total coins I know I was doing a thorough job of it. If I also have a pocket full of pulltabs and pencil erasers and ball fillers I know I was really hoping for a gold ring.

Nickels are not nearly as widely circulated as quarters or dimes. There is never an occasion when you HAVE to give out two nickels when breaking a dollar. That's assuming the person making change is trying to use as few coins as possible.

94 coins is a nice days hunting. Great job!

I wish I would have a 94 coin day...94 was the total so far for my 4 hunts since I got my Ace. I only average about an hour and a half per trip and am learning as I go.
Todays face value was 3.35 in clad and a lot of aluminum. The bad thing about hunting in a sports complex is that there is a lot of beer drinking after the games and the cans get left on the grass. When the big old lawn mower comes along it turns those cans into CANfetti which really eats up a lot of time for those of us that dig up most every signal.

When my brother and I hunt we always wager some cash. Here's how we count points. All clad are face value. Nickels are worth 50. Indians are 100. Any 90% silver is 100. Gold or silver jewelry are 100 We usually find clad so it's pretty easy to keep track. But dig one of those elusive nickels and there's a quick 50. You can make up your own point system. We usually wager $5.00 or a burger. That keeps it more fun!

Your nickel ratio will be small compared to everything else. Nickels don't buy much these days, they don work in vending machines,. and you don't get many in change In one of my coin cans I have 218 quarters - 268 dimes - 612 cents, but only 56 nickels. JUst the wayit works out.

Nothing wrong with 94 coins. As I said in my other post no vending machines taske nickels anymore because you can't buy anything for a nickel. When I was a kid a nickel was a hunk of money. Put another nickel with it and it would pay your way into the movies. Three more would buy your pop, candy, and popcorn. And they say there is no inflation. A pair of Hostess cupcakes used to be a nickel now they are $1.30 and up. That's a 1600% markup.

Bill

If the 250 had a dial adjusted notch like a detector of another brand I used to own you could up your nickel count immensely.

If you have real good hearing there is a slight difference in tone between tabs and nickel. I can tell when a nickel is under the coil everytime.

Bill

I get my share of nickels. I just don't think people (or kids) carry as many as the other change. You go to a playground that hasn't been hit for a while and the ratio of nickels to penny-dime-quarter is still low. You gotta use them to lose them.

Just not that many nickels out there. Like most everyone else here at the forum I might get one or two nickels.
Maybe the government isn't making that many to begin with.
