Is this a Confederate mini ball holder ?

Got this today from a old guy that knows I like civil war items. He told me that this was carryed by a confederate from here in NC.He told me that the guy used it to carry mini balls in. The lid is missing. Is made of leather. I also got the canteen from the same person.Same confederate had it. So what do you guys think ? I am going to keep searching until I go in to have my surgery.
 
Looks like what we used to have at the local pool hall. It held what we called peas, which were balls with numbers to shake and draw one to determine what order to play a game of cutthroat on the snooker tables.
