Could it be from a hand saw? I have 2 old saws that have similar, but different, "doodads" that run through the handle right in front of the area where you grip it. Don't know if modern saws have them. I got them from my dads shop after he died in 1967. I remember them as a little boy so they are at least 80 years old. He bought them right after returning from WW2.
