Its a civil war period knapsack rivet used in the union side of the civil war but most found are civilian, horse tack rivet. Many are found in areas with no CW activity and on farm homesteads along side common horse tack rivets, indicating that they were sold as army surplus to civilians after the war. Its a solid indicaion that they are mid-1800s. Its a keeper, anything to identify CW period is worth putting in the mid-1800's/CW collection.

ive always wondered what those were...ive found several through the years.....dont know if any of mine have stars on them,i will have to check.... thanks for info....
 
I find alot of rivets, but none with this star on it. I'll have to watch for a star on them, when I realize its a rivet I don't usually clean the surface well enough to check for anything stamped on it. They usually show up as a penny signal on my MXT Pro.
