Is there such thing as an Eldorado uMax?

Dirt Poor

New member
I bought a machine from a fellow member here and got it today. It was advertised in the classifieds as an Eldorado uMax. Man, it's a clean, nice looking machine! It is truly in like-new condition. But nowhere on the machine or owner's manual does it say "uMax". I have a Silver uMax that has "uMax" on the machine. I got into the Tesoro business after the Eldorado was discontinued, so this is the first one I've ever had my hands on. I checked with my distributor today to see if there was such thing as an Eldo u, and he said not that he was aware of, and that there was an early model and a later model, but he hadn't seen a u version. I'm happy with my machine, but was wondering if uMax coils will work on this model, as I have a smaller one for trashy sites. This one says VLF and Micro Processor, but no uMax.. Thanks....

There were two EL Dorado's. A metal box was the first then the smaller boxed plastic one. It will work with any of the Umax 5 pin coils.

The Eldorado using microprocessorTechnology first appeared in Tesoro's Metal Detector Information magazine in 2001. It is of the micromax design and its suggested retail price at that time was $469.
It has VLF 10 kHz Frequency with a frequency shift toggle switch. It came standard with the 9x8 coil, 3 3/4 turn ground control and c an use all the coils made for the tesoro machines with similar circuitry operating at the same frequency (and that is quite a range). It can be operated in both all metal and discriminate modes, and mine, purchased in 2002 is still going strong and has found thousands of coins and lots of silver and some gold. If it is operating properly then you should have a wonderful time with it. Good Luck.

I think (ONE) of the questions he's asking & it's got me curious to.-----Does some of the El Dorado umax's have "umax" on the side decal of the detector & some don't??--Also the word "umax" (or lack of it) on some of the owners manuals??----After the first El Dorado series, the 2nd series are certainly all umax's but could it be that Tesoro didn't include the word "umax" on some of the earlier El Dorados umax's that came out, then started putting the word on them later?-----Anybody know??? :) --------Del

Thanks!!! I believe it's going to be a great machine. My old Silver uMax has been really good to me, and I know this one will be too.

Thanks!! That's probably the main question I had.

Del, Mine does not have the words U max on the decal, nor do the pirctures of the Eldorado in the MDI of, 2001, 2002, 2003. In 2004 MDI the Vaquero, Eldorado's replacement, was featured. On the decal are the words
"MICRO PROCESSOR
VLF DISCRIMINATOR" These words are above the Tesoro logo. I haven't seen any Eldorado machines other than the one I own, but the pictures featured in Tesoro's mag. suggest that the word Umax does not appear on the decal. I have seen the Eldorado referred to as a Umax ( and I may also have been guilty of this) but this reference, I believe, is to distinguish this Eldorado, which uses micro processor technology, from the old Eldorado, which, I presume, was an analogue machine. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the confusion, Rick. Technically, they are not called "Eldorado uMax," they are simply called "Eldorado." I called it the Eldorado uMax because I wanted to distinguish it from the old metal box version in the title of the classified ad. Despite the name change, this is a uMax model. It works with all 5 pin uMax coils. It is the model that replaced the Bandido II uMax, and that detector had "uMax" in the name. "uMax" is short for Tesoro's "micro max technology."

The Vaquero replaced the Eldorado, but it is a different detector altogether and is not referred to as a "uMax". It has the newer H.O.T technology, and the coils have 4 pins and are not compatible with the older detectors.

Thanks, I was just curious because I've read so much about the Eldo uMax models, but never saw "uMax" on the machines. Anyway, I really like the machine, regardless of whether it says umax or not:cheers:. I know that the 5-pin plugs will give me a wide variety of coils to choose from. Thanks again!!!!.........Rick

I was kinda hoping Monte would view this thread and chime in. THANKS!!!! I know that I learned alot just now from reading his reply. I have been a Tesoro fan for a few years now, and had some questions about the history of some of their models. They just got answered. I think I'll print that out. :)
