Is there really much of a difference here ?

THIS ?

I was doing some reading in one of Andy Sabisch's books recently , and thought I would share this info with you ......He took 161 Gold rings from his collection and sampled them on his machine , and this was the results that he came up with .....

0 rings hit as Iron
25 rings, 16% hit as Ring Tab
61 rings, 38% as Foil
48 rings, 30% as square tab
15 rings, 9% as Nickel
8 rings, 5 % as Zn penny
4 rings, 2 % as High tone quarter/penny

OR THIS ?

For all the arguing , these numbers really don't look very different to me ....... Are you saying that your numbers are very similar to to Andy's numbers ? ......... And you're arguing about it ? .....Or am I seeing things ? ..... It looks to me like you're confirming the chart that you were arguing about with your own chart ............Jim

those are interesting stats.... ironically this subject crossed my mind while beach hunting last saturday... when i got to the dry sand i was digging up alot of foil.... just about every target was foil.. so i notched most of it out all the while wondering how much gold i might be also notching out at the same time... interesting stats thanks for sharing... i only ever found one gold ring which read out as a zinclon and it was a large 14k...

Interesting. Based on what I see I will be digging targets in the high foil-low tab area with a goos repeatable signal. The indian head area in older sites. Silver in all areas and forget the rest unless I'm relic hunting.

Range is range ..........It matters not what machine we are talking about .....The Foil range can hit whatever number or tone it wants in ANY machine ....Foil range is STILL foil range ....... You can hit the foil range of ANY machine .....Again , this is just general information from one man and his collection of 161 rings ...... Critter also has his collection of rings ......The numbers of rings may differ, but what I see is that the percentages of what Critter found, and what Andy found are NOT that much different ....... yet Andy's representation is some how BIASED according to Critter ...... I'm trying to figure out how you spend so much time writing about someting you disagree with , and then come out with pretty much the same results !!!...... ..... Jim

PS ....Just another feature of the ETrac is the matrix that allows you to discriminate each little item that you want and save the program to your machine for future use , not just a broad notch that can take out good targets with the bad ......and NO DEPTH PENALTY FOR DISCRIMINATING

Over the years I have read articles and books by Andy, which has been very help full information.Maybe his critics should write their own books and field test reports. As for me I'll go by with the pros information.

All I'll add is that NO MACHINE IS PERFECT. And that no user of that machine is perfect either!

It's the simplest hobby in the world. You buy a machine that detects metal via an electric field. When metal is in that field the machine goes "Beep". The rest is nonsense. Sure I like some discrimination, but the rest is just bunkum. For god's sake, if I were to meter all the targets I find and dig only based on a number readout I would have half the stuff I've got now!! Like I keep saying, although machines get more powerful as the years go by they also get more gizmo's which, in essence, are just trying to get you to not dig up a metal object the machine has detected. It's bizarre.

AND, in my most humble opinion (of 20+ years detecting in the UK), the sov gt is a great machine, but the etrac is better. Sometimes I read some of these posts and think that a lot of you guys don't really want to dig anything.........You wouldn't find much over here of any use or history with the approach some of you have of rigidly sticking to meter readouts, that's for certain.

Anyhoo, happy hunting all. And let's face it, none of us really know any of the answers do we, but one thing is for 100% certain, the etrac is the best machine out there (At least for proper relic/field hunting, not that airy fairy beach nonsense :clapping:).

Andy who? I was under the assumption that Critter was the pro here.

The post above looks like a Republican conference.

Nice rings Max. I dig practically everything, but am still a Noob that enjoys clad......

Me too, its the ONLY discrimination method that works 100%, the eye, trash in one pouch and the good stuff in the other compartment

Now that all newbies have been convinced they need a meter on their GT to actually find things with it, a voice of reason comes forth. Meters lie and you can't tell when their lying until you dig it. But hey, toys are fun to play with and detecting is all about having fun --isn't it. Whatever works for you. If it's not the GT try something else. And --Oh yes, the price of the 180 Minelab meter has jumped 150 percent in the last two years along with the price of their coils while the price of the detector has remained pretty constant. Marketing--got to love it.
HH:cool:

Referring to beach hunting as airy-fairy. I LOVE IT. Now thats just funny. I don't care what anyone says. That should get a string of wet replies.

I use my GT on the beach all the time. I did get smart enough to take my meter off after a year. That wet stuff and the sand is hard on meters. Then when I was having coil problems I took the meter off when diggin in dirt. I never looked back (literally). You can find out just as much switching back and forth from Disc to A/M fixed and most of the time that combination won't lie to you. But then you will come across a target that throws all your supposedly scientific reasoning back at you. Final word--detectors lie and lie--but you try and try. Hunt more. That's the answer. HH

Don,

Do you mean that a faint response in disc should also elicit a faint response in A/M? If not, what are you listening for that, between A/M and disc, indicates a worthy target?

dbsmokey.
I think Don is referring to hunting in AM and then checking the target in Discrimination to see if it's iron or a good target ... I sold my meter, so I hunt like this now .....I don't rely on a meter now as I'm trying to get use to tones since I will be getting a dedicated water machine WITHOUT a meter ....Jim
