Is There Anything There or is it just me!!!

Hi Again

I have spent the last 4 hours at a really popular beach here n Australia ( its the middle of winter so not so Popular This time of year) but saying that there were about 20 people swimming..

After Setting the following setting on The excal 11 :-

Disc - 1

Sens - 7

Volume - 3 / 4

Threshold - just an annoying mozzie sound.

and was in Disc not pin point

Now the problem is when i swing in the water around waist deep and not too fast I get a great signal but only once its a deep buzzy growl sounds fantastic but I only get it once i swing back and nothing I move away come back and nothing..

I tried pin point and tried adjusting the Disc to 8 or 9 but not really any difference..

So after 4 hours the only thing I found was a toy car and a bolt,, Am I doing something wrong or is there nothing to find.

Would appreciate some guidance on this..

Thanks

hey sir findalot

your settings are close to what i use... having said that... water wading for me has been a bit hit and miss lately too

some of the popular beaches around Sydney (east and just north of the harbour) have people on them 24x7 during summer... seriously :rage:

we had some wave movement a few weeks ago but i think things are sanding in again

just a bad day?

PS... the cold water isnt here yet! <giggling> i hate cold water!!!! :yikes:

I've never really got any false hits from my GT on the beach, unless storms have exposed a large patch of intense black sand and then it's like a pinball machine going off, but despite that the BBS machines are still known as the best when it comes to handling black sand, unless you are talking a PI machine of course.

Sir FindALot...I just love that handle. Reminds me of Monty Python And The Holly Grail.

If you are experiencing phantom signals for some reason then sweep over it several time from different angles. If it still is there then it should be a real target. Also, are you using a coil cover? If so ditch it and use 4 or 5 coats of spray on bed liner to protect the coil. Water or sand under the coil cover can cause this and other problems. Just make sure it dries very well between coats or it will never harden right.

Also, are you scrubbing the sand? I never scrub the soil in sand or on land for that matter. Just low enough to skim without hitting the ground. Some like to scrub but in my experience that can cause falsing and so cost me depth.

Critter..... if he has a warranty he best use the coil cover and NOT bed liner spray it will VOID his warranty. You will get some false readings from the salt and minerals.... especially if you swing with the beach instead of an in and out pattern. Take a scoop off if you have a doubt. You can even hunt with PP out there in those conditions with higher sensitivty since its not really affected by falsing. You can check them in disc.... its known as reverse disc.

if sensetivity is too high excals with often false in rythm with wave action....another possibility could be a small piece of foil moving away from your original target spot....foil and very light metalic objects often move due to the turbulence of the coil swinging over them...... you could try lowering the sensetivity a little until stable...good luck mate... ps.keep an eye out for those box jellyfish=scary stuff...

Thanks all you guys

I really don't Know what the deal is but I did pull the cover off when I got home and there was a fair amount of sand in there does this "BED LINER" go by any other name ( never heard of it) I don't really know if re sanding is the issue as its the first time to the beach and its and hour and a half's drive so bit far to monitor the sand levels, Maybe it was just a bad day.......

Toecutta I heard that the Sydney beaches were hunted continually do you have any luck there? I did check the water temp ( Middle of winter is 20 deg C so not really bad)

Critter Hunter - I don't scrub the bottom when searching just an inch above I have had a few comments on the name all I need to do is live up to it.....

Bootyhoundpa - You may be on to something with the floating foil I did see a few bit washing up on the sand

Anyway I will give auto a go clean the coil cover and play around with the sensitivity and see how I go

Thanks for all the help it is appreciated

Search this forum and the beach forum for "bed liner" (Exact Phrase, All Dates). Plenty of info on it, but like he said don't use it on a machine that is still under warranty.

hey Sir Findalot
yer.. the water was 18 this AM.. my "considerably better half" swims every morning... the ice-cream headaches and increase in blood pressure as parts of my body seek refuge in other parts of my body from about now till Nov just dont do it for me.. i just cant pull the swimming cap down far enough! a couple of times a year it gets down to 13 deg...

the currents lag the seasons by a few months.. cold water is still coming up the coast.. will do until october-ish

Sydney beaches... On a good day.. they are great.. on a bad day.. it can be a can-slaw aluminium salad from hell

something i have learnt over the last few years.. the sea will open up when "it" is ready to... till then you are better of waiting till the conditions are right

Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! rage! blow!

Toecutter

Dont think you would get me in the water at 18 c even at 20 I had the wetsuit on.. usually we get storms in January / February but really windy in August

It was disappointing that there were no ring pulls or rubbish maybe the worlds cleanest beach, I will keep trying..

I'm currently having the same issue. I have been getting what sound like possible gold targets only to disappear once I dig the signal. I know about foil, but I don't think that is what is going on. It really only happens with the low sounding targets. I've tried pinpointing and digging more scoops but to no avail. It has me extremely frustrated.Have zero discrimination and sensitivity between 5 to 7.

Rarysgaard

Yes its very frustrating its hard enough to get some of these targets out but when they disappear its impossible, let me know how you go and if you find a cure..

Thanks

Sounds like a floating piece of foil if you are in the water like others said. I've had that happen and chase one for 20 minutes until I get too frustrated and give up. It can keep re-floating right back down into the hole, or even disappear as it goes away with the current and then you think you had a false hit. Some put some fine mesh in the very bottom of the scoop so small stuff like that or diamond earings don't fall out of the scoop, yet the sides of the scoop still allow the sand and such to escape.

in a freshwater lake i hunt ive also had simular disapearing targets that later turn out to be small lead sinkers or sometimes even pendent earings will also slip thru the scoop holes......if i suspect it is a small target i only take off 2 inches of sand at a times that way im usually less likely to loose the target entirely....;
