Is there anything that reads 99 on the VDI? Treasure?

I just got my new Garrett AT GOLD metal detector. Also my first metal detector ever. I am loving it! Only found one penny(1995) so far, but that's because the ground is undiggable, it is frozen hard yet. but in some spots i can dig maybe 2 inches. Problem is i have marked at least seven or eight coins where there is no snow just can't dig yet...But then i went down in the revine where a creek runs through in the back of my yard. I started to search for signals because the creek is flowing and the ice is all melted around it. on the way down the steep hill i was running my detector and got a loud high pitch beep. It says it is big though, because i get the same signal for at least 6-7 inches long and 3 inches wide. The reading says 99 and is at 6 inches deep. First thing i thought was mabe electrical. But no electricity is ran out to the revine. so i am really stumped. I can't dig it because it is covered in 4 inches of snow and the ground is harder than a rock. I kicked the snow away to the ground and still got the same reading of 99...Thinking maybe the snow was giving a false reading or somethingIs there anything that would give a 99 reading? I think my metal detector i have is working properly because the 1 penny i did dig was after i found that spot. and that was as easy as finding that constant 99 signal. Any help would be apppreciated. Also to add my house was built on an old city dump from the early settlement of my town. There is all sorts of stuff in that revine.
Thanks,
Les

What is iron wraparound? I know you mean iron, but is it something worth digging?
Thanks,
Les

March last year.. I dug my first 99 coin size target,, it was a loud high tone, in the Pro mode...
You can see the rust in the plug,, but my tone was good...
I had done air tests with a bunch of coin's,nothing read 99,,so i dug this 99, thinking a coke can,
but it checked out coin size with my 5x8" coil....Now I never pass a 99 coin size target.
1943 Walking Liberty half out of the ground read like 92 and going back over the hole
I get the iron grunt sound.....

If you are just starting out with the AT pro, do a lot of digging of targets, take notes.
To my way of hunting, the 5x8 and the 4.5 coils are a must,, in a year's time, I only had the stock 8.5 x 11"
coil on about 3 times...All my site's have been hunted for year's,,, no one finds it all..
The AT Pro has helped me a lot in these hunted out sites...
I love the 4.5" coil and a super trashy site, some will walk away from them,, I got a nice 14k ring from
just a site...
Good Luck...
BJ

Beautiful half dollar and ring. I've dug some items that rang up as 99, but can't remember what they were. I can't write down what I find when I'm in the water
but haven't had that vdi on land yet. My voa tape recorder quit on me and I've been thinking about getting another so I can keep up with what I find because my memory is nothing to brag about. Now, what were we talking about??? lol
Let us know what that target was when the ground thaws. I did find some electrical parts that went high on the dvi and some type of lead thing, but can't remember what it was.

Even a pull tab with read different VDI's depending on the soil type, orientation to the coil, depth, intactness, bent etc.......If unsure...."DIG IT" as it costs you nothing and will eliminate the possibility of leaving a good target behind 100% of the time:thumbup:

Hey Guys,
A little recap, I didn't get to dig the 99 target yet, but i have been doing some research. I really hope it's a jar of ike dollars! Since they show up on AT PROS at that vdi supposedly. lol. The ground is still frozen. Nearly retore my rotator cuff digging today at my sister's house. she has 5 acres of an old farmhouse and old barn and land. Her yard gets the whole day of sunshine due to no shaded areas. Lots of targets but they are deep. The deepest i could get was 5 inches and that was pulling 2 inches of ice out of the ground. what a workout! I gave up on that even though it was a solid 82, most likely a dime. I'll be back to get it when the ground is more forgiving. I did pull a 2003 dime out of the driveway and that's what that vdi came up as. Sadly, that's the only thing i could pull today. By the way my soil isn't that bad here 44 on the ground balance. at my sisters it was 42. So that 99 VDI has got my brain wishing for miracles. Nice stories you guys added. If anybody else has anything that rang up as a 99 VDI. I would like to hear.

Thanks,
Les

no treasure! A huge ball of rolled up tinfoil.
thanks anyways.

As you spend more time learning the sounds that the machine makes, the more confident you will be about what's under the coil. BUT you never know for sure unless you dig it. I started detecting in 2010, and since then I have been learning to rely on the sounds rather than the numbers all the time. I was using my Garrett GtaX back when I started, and one day I found my first "big score". It registered as "12", or silver dollar, the highest on the screen. It sounded just like the other big junk I had been digging, but this time it turned out to be a Morgan silver dollar and two silver Barber halves! Before I dug it I thought it sounded too good to be true, and it sounded EXACTLY like the big junk targets I had dug. If I could go back in time, I am sure that I would now be able to tell the difference between that great sound as opposed to the other sounds I dug.

That was the Gtax550, the AT detectors are far more advanced. I love mine, and I'm getting more confident with it. Go slow and DIG IT ALL...you and your machine will be speaking the same language soon!

Good luck!

Dug this large soccer toss coin that was a solid 99 VDI on my Atpro.

Most of the foil I run across shows as a silver coin and not around the 38-41 DVI reading. It depends on the size, but the AT/Pro finds foil at different readings based on the size and the depth.

I wound always dig a 99 if it was giving as good tone as some real deep targets don't even give a reading on the number but still give brilliant digable tone
