Is there a way to mod a GT so that it will run single frequency?

Could it be done? To add a switch to choose between BBS and single frequency. I think that would be a plus for the GT if it is possible. Then if you were doing some light hunting you could flip over to single frequency, something in the 17 range. Then you should be able to swing fast. I would use it in parks and some other places for speed then the BBS for relics or old homesites.

Just wondering...

No way, nohow.

Sorry Julien.....

Sovs are designed to operate on multiple freqs , not single freqs.
Sovs use multiple freq pulsed (square wave)output.
Pulses are comprised of an infinite number of odd harmonics....you will never have just one freq.
The circuitry in the Sov is designed to operate on pulsed signals.
The power supplies in the meter and the coil recieve preamp require square wave input to provide smooth operating voltage.

In short........you would have to have a completely different detector inside the box to switch to for single freq operation. You would then have to figure out how you were going to power the recieve preamp and meter with a single freq sine wave signal.

On the surface, sounds like a good idea.....particularly if you could select the operating freq you want. Just not possible.

Would be interesting to see what putting all the Sov's power into one single freq would do. Might light up the ground minerals and trash so bad that it would be useless.

The Sov has uses quite a bit of transmit power. Around half the power drain on the batteries is used by the coil. Have had a coil that uses a time and a half the power that a stock coil does. Lots of power.

Only problem is that it lights up anything near the coil. Not a good thing around trash and other metal objects close by. Many would like to increase their power output, but don't know what they are asking for.

Consider the X-Terra...... Low operating voltage and the batteries last almost forever. Obviously a very efficient use of the power used.

There is a balance involved here between transmit power and reciever sensitivity. We also have transmitted frequencies and what metals respond best to them.

Do a little thinking before you jump too fast for something that may not suit your needs .

Thinking I am... I have been asking questions and thinking about it for a couple of months but I will buy something soon. I am considering the X-T 70, the Tejon, the DMC-IIBa, and also I am just thinking about buying a Sun Ray 8" coil for my GT. I really have no problem with the performance of the GT, it truly is a great machine, just a little heavy after extended use. That is my biggest excuse for wanting a new detector. The other reason, of course, is just wanting a new toy.
The Tejon is looking really good because of the prive, and it's supposed to be so hot... then again, I certainly find my share even on sites that have been hit hard with all kind's of machines. I'd probably find more if I could slow down a little more.
What do you think of the comparative effectiveness of the Tejon vs X-Terra 70 vs the SovGT?
Frankly, i'll probably eventually buy one of each, it's just the order in which I buy them... I love a new toy!
Thanks for listening. I know I am kinda thinking out loud.

Have not used a Tesoro or a X-T. I want some kind of decent ID system, so I would personally lean toward the X-T.

One thing really puts me off about detectors that are reported to be very sensitive to very small objects is that I really don't want a detector that wants to hit on every tiny bit of trash in the dirt. I have had a couple foil demons, and hate the things. I like the way the Sovs tend to ignore the really little or thin trash. It goes with my kind of hunting, and the locations where I hunt.

I really like Sov audio, and really hate the sound of "beepers".

Go with whatever you feel would suit your personal preferences.

I came to my senses... see my other post. Thanks Art for helping me figure it out. Sometime's I really confuse myself.

If I had a whole bunch of money, I would probably buy a couple dozen different detectors.

First I would weed out the ones I really could not stand. Next, try to learn the rest to see which ones had something special that I could find useful. Next, pick 2 or 3 that would get enough use to justify keeping them. Sell the rest and lose some money.

Finally.......

Sell them all because they ain't a Sov.

Much wasted time and money.
