Is there a performance difference between the white 13" Ultimate coil and the black one?

The white color is supposed to reflect sunlight thus keeping the coil cooler and more stable in sunny hot weather.
The problem, not many like white coils myself included.

Then the question is....exactly how hot does a coil have to get to become unstable? If they indeed changed the color on this premise is there a known problem with the Ultimate? Are all coils susceptible to this? It is an interesting change they made...I have a black one BTW...

I had a black one and got rid of it because I didn't think it performed as well as hyped.
White is going to always look dirty whether it is more stable or not.
I would guess there is no reason other than a matter of production costs somehow but , I can assure you , you will never get an answer about stability or performance difference from Detech

I have no idea.....BUT even tho I don't use mine much at all I'm damned glad I have it handy when I do use or need it!!!!! It has it's place and it seems to occaisionally sniff out those deepies on edge.

Its called ambient temperature rise.
Any electronic circuit can be designed to deal with a set temperature easily.
The issue is when a device is taken out of an air conditioned car and exposed to hot direct sunlight.
The electronics have to compensate for the temperature rise on the fly.

Or... when the temperature of an electrical device or component exceeds the design limits.
In hot direct sunlight touch a white object and then touch a black object.
Electrical component characteristics can change somewhat dependent on the degree of the ambient temperature.

There's also a 'theory' that ultra violet rays can affect the tiny signals generated by an 'analog' coil. That would have a similar effect as EMI.
White reflects ultra violet rays better than darker colors. I'm not sold on that one until i see the data.

Granted in the case of metal detectors especially modern uProcessor based, this is all likely negligable.

Having said all that, i like my black coils.

That all makes sense. There are many factors that we as detectorists have noticed the effect of,yet we are unable to see or document the real cause of what is usually a problem. Walk into a site with the same machine setup from one day to the next and performance can vary greatly, and we are hardly ever privy to the reason why. A simple change in color could be another one of those things that could have a small effect on performance, one way or another...

I have the white one that is camoflaged with black Flex-Seal which makes it somewhat water proof. It worked just fine as a white coil but now works just fine as a black water proof coil.

I better detect at night then or at least in the shade. Can't have a hot coil lol. Where I live I have had my F75 shut off it gets so hot. You think the human body would give up first. I live in a very harsh environment, and I can tell you I am putting this brand new etrac through the paces. Reading the Andy S. book and the owners manual you only get so much information. All of which will eventually give me the right combination of coils. I will buy a 15 inch coil in the future and find this temp reference very interesting. Is there any other field test of literature out there about this on minelab coils? My biggest concern is not heat, but weight and durability. I know color is added at the mold. But can anyone say they have disassembled a coil and know the difference? Is there any pics of one of these coils disassembled to share? All I have to go on is performance reports from friends who own the etrac and what coils they use.
