Is there a difference between a purple box Surfmaster PI and a Yellow box one?

That depends on if you got the PI Pro or the Dual Field PI (both have yellow boxes). If you're refering to the one that just sold on eBay last week with the crappy headphones and no o-ring then the answer is no (it was an earlier yellow one). The Surf PI has the purple box. However, if you want it to run on premium instead of regular then I would recommend you send it to Mr. Bill and have him tweek it.
