Is there a detector that...............

Let me start by saying that I am very new to the world of detecting. And I want to get into prospecting on the side. So the question is, is there a detector that can do mostly coin shooting with some relic hunting. One that is capable on the beach and on occasion I can take it with me to point me in the right direction to start panning for gold? I'm in Ohio and there is not much gold here to speak of. Mostly fine or flake with some pickers every now and then. My budget is not one where I can buy a nice coinshooter and then go get one of the higher end Minelabs. But depending on your answers maybe I should get a lesser detector for playing around with and then wait until I can afford a lesser detector for just gold? I really appreciate any help I can get.

thanks again,
Clyde

Hello Clyde welcome from KY,check with the sponsors listed on the forum page . Howard

Hi Clyde,
I reckon you cant go past either a Whites MXT or a Tesoro Lobo ST. Used ones pop up all the time either on the classified section here on on Craigslist. Seen both of them for $450 or less. Great allround
units for coins, relics and particularly GOLD. Thanx, Andy

YO =Clyde, I'm just across the state line In Indiana, What I'm usin for about the same kind of detecting you describe is Garrett Scorpion, Gold stinger, for me it works for everything, and they can be bought for less than $500.00, I like em and they work well for me, Might check em out. There's a lot will do what you want, but I like what I got.
Where U at?? mebbe we get together, I'm a geezer :detecting:

I would look at the Whites MXT or the LOBO ST. The mxt is metered and the Lobo is not but the better of the 2 for gold is the Lobo, for coins and relice's I'd say they are both on par. The MXT control box is hard wired on the shaft w 2 yr warranty The Lobo control box comes off the shaft and is belt or chest mountable and comes with lifetime warranty, both are the same money new. The Garrett Gold Stinger is a wasteof money and hasn't been changed in over 20 years. Welcome to the hobby and good luck with what ever you choose.

Take a look at this thread over at nuggetshooter link it's topic is "Least expensive nugget detector, Want to spend less than $500 but want to buy new"

One thing to conceder is resale value. You cant go wrong with a well known name brand like Tesoro, Whites or Minelab.

The Lobo or the MXT would be my choice, the Garrett Stinger eat batteries and is not as sensitive as the the Lobo or MXT.
