Is There A Concentric Coil for the Gold Bug Pro?

Furious T

Active member
Either one that specifically designed for the Gold Bug Pro, or one that works perfectly with the GB that was made for something else in the F series or Teknetics ranges....Anyone know? Thanks

I know that Dave J has put a post on this subject, but the best I can glean from that is that some might work and others might not (and the T2 coils dont work)...anyone know any more than this, or have any experience in this topic. Thanks

My F5's standard coil works, but thats not an endorsement for you to go buy one as there are no other coils made for the Gold Bug Pro / G2 other than the 5" DD and the 11" DD.

Check Dave J's post about Gold Bug Pro / G2 coils.

The 10" concentric, Which is a coin killer on the Tek Omega should work just fine...I put an 11" DD on my Omega at a local lake and quickly went back to the stock 10" concentric...

Dave J's answer is that the GB/G2 in not made for concentric coils if one works great.

Thanks fellas,
I dont have a dealer close by, but I do own the Omega with a 10" concentric..thanks for your reply cowtownkid, I might give the Omega coil a try...Dave J does say that you wont damages anything by trying it, so I might see how that works...thanks for replies everyone.

An air test, will show you, 13 1/2 nickel wow. 8 inch coil.

I never have swapped my 10" Omega coil over to my G2...I will try this just because...I don't expect any problems though, the 5" is interchangeable between both units. I'll give this a shot.

Now, that's the official statement and it is one of the things that sort of lets me down. The same applies to search coil selection for the Teknetics T2 as well. It only has Double-D coils designed for it, too.

Personally, while I like some DD coils on some models for certain uses, I am a very devoted fan of a good CONCENTRIC search coil. There isn't one available for the T2, and supposedly not functional on the G2/Gold Bug Pro.

Having said that, I have used both the round 8" concentric from a delta or Gamma on the G2, as well as the elliptical 10" concentric (5

Thanks Monte, that's very helpful info...before I read your post, I did put the 10" concentric from my Omega on the Gold But Pro, just for an air test...the Gold Bug did not seem to get the depth with the concentric that the Omega does (this was air test only) and the audio response on the Gold Bug could only be described as feeble when compared to the Omega....so my thoughts are to leave my 10" concentric on the Omega, where it performs very very well, and to use the 5"dd on the Gold Bug, unless I am at the beach or in wide open spaces....The 11' dd on the Gold Bug at a saltwater beach, dry and damp sand, leaving the Gold Bug in All Metal, gets very good depth...as you say, the 5" in trashy ground is exceptional. Thanks again

The 10" Concentric can work on the G2, and it did for me ... BUT, not as well as on the Omega, and I prefer the 10" elliptical concentric on the Omega for most hunting.

The G2/Gold Bug Pro works quite well with the 5" DD coil, especially in trashier areas. I don't get the depth and performance with the G2 w/11" DD that I can with other makes and models. At least not for general hunting.

The G2/Gold Bug Pro w/11" DD for open areas like the beach or a plowed field you get okay performance, AND, like you stated, use of the All Metal mode will really help the G2/Gold Bug Pro get the depth and performance in those types of applications.

No perfect detector is made, but there are some good detectors for different applications and the G2/Gold Bug Pro are in that mix (as is the Omega).

Any thoughts? I put the 10 incher from my Omega on my Gold Bug and it went straight to overload and would not be quiet.

Tom, when I put my Omega coil on the Gold Bug, it also was noisy, and, while it did respond to targets (air test, inside house), the response wasn't so good. I didn't take the test any further....I guess I'm happy to leave the Omega coil on the Omega...it works well there:)

funny that hey gold bug coils work on omega and omega coils dont work on gold bug, Dave J did say that the bug is made for DD coils?

Quote from the sticky on the top of this forum:

The new Bug (and also Tek G2) are designed to work with the Tek "Greek series" (also known as "Frat Bros.") series DD searchcoils, which at this time (Nov 2010) consists of a 5 inch round and an 11 inch elliptical.

Some people have gotten creative and plugged in other searchcoils from the FratBros and F75 series just to find out what happens. Results have been mixed. Because of manufacturing variation in searchcoils some individual ones of a particular type may "work" and others may not work. The ones that "work" may in fact exhibit subtle performance deficiencies, or may seem to work fine today but not tomorrow.

FTP-Fisher explicitly un-recommends that people purchase anything other than searchcoils specified for use with these units. But if you have one of our other searchcoils anyway, there's nothing to stop you from plugging it in just to see what happens. It won't damage the machine. Note however that Tek T2 searchcoils flat out won't work, they're wired different.

This question crops up on such a regular basis that I invite the moderator to make it a "sticky".
