is the xterra detectors weatherproof?

Most of the coils are waterproof but not the detector.

thanks but i didnt ask if they where waterproof,i asked if they where weather proof. that means can they be used in the rain without a covering.

The detector is not weather resistant. I would not use it in the rain.

What's the problem with using a cover?
Personally, I won't hunt without a cover rain or shine. It protects the face from wear. My gritty dirty thumb would tear up the finish and wear the graphics off the face in short order without a cover.

That said, I don't hunt on land in the rain. Digging in the rain equates to making a muddy mess. And whether I'm in a park, at a school, or hunting a private residence I don't want to make or leave muddy spots in my wake, as it endears you to nobody and can taint people's opinion of us and our hobby.

my problem with covers or the same as my problem with anything thats over priced, like most anything anymore.ive try to buy one but 18.00 is all ill pay for a used one.fixed income and budget.

I've used quart size zip-loc freezer bags over my control box since new. Because of the large buttons and screen icons, they work great. Just poke a hole for the headphone jack and secure the open bottom around the handgrip with tape or a Velcro wrap. I replace the bag when changing out the batteries. There is no need to remove the back to change coils. I've use the MD this way in slight drizzle w/o any problems. The actual screen still looks perfect after years of use.
