Is the Vaquero as good on gold jewelry as the Compadre?

[size=large]If you mount the same size/type coil on the Vaquero, then adjust it so that they both have similar settings for Discrimination, GB and Sensitivity (which will be a guess with the latter two) you still have a difference in operating frequency and electronics. In dense iron nail trashed sites I might grab the Compadre. However, for most applications, the Vaquero will offer much more versatility due to he two modes of operation, ability to change search coils, and the operator control over the Sensitivity and Ground Balance. Therefore, I'd pick the Vaquero for overall performance potential over a wide range of ground and site conditions.

Thanks Monte and Hightone. I appreciate the insight. I know I ask alot of newbie questions on this forum, but I am just about ready to make an expensive decision. If you were to use the V on trashy sites what would your most likely selection of sttings and coils be?

I would use the 5.75 inch coil, and the setting would vary depending on location and conditions

I still would chose the 5.75 concentric or the 3x18 wide scan

[size=medium]as I use for virtually all discriminating models in trashy sites:

Sensitivity: As high as possible w/o chatter.

Threshold: (More properly a 'Tuner' control) Would be set for a slight audio (at the threshold of sound).

Ground Balance: Usually, but not always, I would set it as close to 'spot-on' as possible to just slightly positive in the All Metal/Pinpoint mode. However, this can vary with the particular make or model used, and the site I am searching.

Discrimination: Generally, I set mine just at the point where I just reject a common iron nail on top of the ground. There will be times, when in extreme mineralization, for example, that I might adjust lower than that, even to the point where I am in an All Metal Accept setting (on those models which provide such adjustment). Seldom, very, very seldom, do I ever use more discrimination than iron nail rejection because it can encroach on small, thin gold jewelry (like the little 14K ring I got yesterday), and it can impact depth of detection, and add to good-target masking.

I would use a 5
