Is the SE really that much better than the XS??

I have an Explorer XS (with X1 probe) which I've had for several years and now that it's getting warmer I'm trying to decide whether or not it makes sense to upgrade to the SE.

This may seem like a silly question to some, but since I didn't spend as much time detecting last year or reading the forums as I would have liked to, I'm curious as to whether or not there is much improvement with the SE over previous models. When the ExpII came out many said that it wasn't worth the upgrade unless you were looking for something that's easier on the back and more pleasing to the eye. Those things didn't bother me much so I kept the XS.

So, bearing in mind that I'm willing to put up with the weight of the XS and the extra time it takes to program the unit, not to mention the battery life which has been said to be longer with the SE, is there really a reason for me to upgrade to the SE?

More specifically....

Looking at capabilities alone, is there much improvement in the descrimination and depth on the SE? Does the Pitch-Hold really make a difference? Is it true that the SE falses a lot less than the XS does?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jeremy

I had a XS for 2 years. I only became fair with it. The crosshair never seemed to lock. I didn't update to the EX11 because others seemed to feel the 2 units were similar. I recently purchased the SE. I still haven't used it much yet. The FER CON numbers lock every time. Reset time is much faster. I thought PITCH HOLD would be a great thing for me; well I don't care for it and still use normal. In air tests I can identify targets with tone and visual. I do quite well in the test garden too. I haven't been in the real world yet. Recent back surgery. HH John R

Hi Jeremy,
I used the SE for a couple months before winter set in. If you plan on getting some quality time in this year and have the money, I say get yourself the SE. You will find a world of difference over the XS.
I feel if you're physically fit enough so the XS dose not bother you to use then the SE will make you happy.
I'm sure you've read enough to know the SE has taken off pretty well and most that have this unit will use it for years to come.
Good luck Bob

I keep hearing that the SE is a silver seeking monster, but can it also find GOLD ? Haven't heard too much in that aspect.

If your talking about nuggets Minelab has a unit just for them and is certainly one of the best in that category.
My hunting buddy using an XS years ago hunting around where their used to be a swimming pool pulled out two gold highschool rings from the 20's and 30's...My feeling is users don't concentrate on the lower spectrum and miss the gold rings..Met a local at Atlantic City using an Explorer on the saltwater beach and he done well with gold jewelry so I feel the sensitivity is there but those that don't investigate the lower spectrum and dig certainly won't get the gold jewelry..Gold rings can be tough with any unit especially in parks where so much junk imitates them so my answer is yes but going to have to concentrate on the lower areas of the meter where they come in...
