Is The I.D. EDGE Dead?

silverseeker 2

Well-known member
I own many machines but love my ID Edge. You don't hear too much on this unit.
This unit id's in all metal and has respectable depth and audio ID. Doesn't get
better than that. This unit in my opinion is very , very under-rated and I don't
understand why they didn't have more sales or users. Sure unit is smaller than
a CZ but it makes it that much more lighter. I turned a friend on to detecting last
year and his first target was a 1957 silver quarter. His first words were,"Would you
ever sell this machine? My reply was "Sure after I'M dead and gone I'll just leave it
to you. This units in great shape and it would take alot to part with her. Just wondering
if there are any Edge users that feel the same or really like this unit alot. In my opinion
it is a machine that is really UNDER-ESTIMATED!!!! JMHO...

I had one, but I also had a Coinstrike. For me the Edge wasn't going to replace the Coinstrike and some of the features of the Edge where takeoffs of the Coinstrike and so much like a coinstrike that I opted to keep the Coinstrike and let the Edge go back its original field tester (mine was labeled Proto Type).
The Edge was very light!
I didn't like the All-metal low growl tone at all!
Really not enough volume either.

But, it was a nice light weight easy to use detector.

The Edge is a very good detector. I used one for about two years then I bought a Coinstrike. Had both and compared them in the ground. They were very similar in depth, maybe equal. I sold the Edge only because the Coinstrike has more features. The Edge was better than my Tesoro Cortes, sold the Cortes. The Coinstrike goes deep enough for me in my neck of the woods.

Might be somewhat dead to some.......
I convinced myself to get another since selling my last two owned 3 years ago.
Always like mine but, after reading about the F5, the two Edge units transformed into an F5.
Kind of always regretted selling them.
Came close to getting another Tesoro or waiting for the new one. Well, the Edge is somewhat of
a lightweight Tesoro Bandido, Cortes, Golden wrapped into one. And if I remember correctly had somewhat better depth capability.
Best of it was a really decent machine for Canadian clad hunting.

One of the other forum members had listed one for sale, surprised no one bought it.
Guess, I was meant to own it.

So now looking for the 6" coil and possibly the 10"

Hello Sven,
I use this unit every now and then and love it. I have always used
the 8" coil and have had a brand new 10" in the closet for a couple
years now but am waiting to use it one day hopefully. As far as the
6" coil I believe a coin strike coil will work but the connector needs
a changing. I believe I read that somewhere. I know a man of your
talents can handle that with ease. I will keep my eyes open for one
of those coils you are looking for. You are right about the Edge having
respectable depth, along with good separation and works nice in the
Iron I feel.Don't have a ton of hours with this unit but it has netted
me some nice finds in it's not used much condition. I think the small
box and LED screen intimidated Fisher users used to the CZ's. The CZ's are a hair deeper
I would say but depth isn't always where it's at!!! The Edge is way under-estimated in my eyes....

If you decide you would like to part with the 10" coil let me know.
I ended up buying a C$ 6" coil out of the UK. I did snip the ground wire and it worked perfectly on the Edge.
Then I shortened the search coil cable to a manageable length as I don't need to hip mount this lightweight machine.
I shortened the cable of the 8" coil as well.

Also did a shielding mod Keith Southern suggested that he did on his years ago to combat EMI and be able to use full sensitivity
in areas he couldn't before. I built a EMI shield like box out of flat aluminum sheet, then wrapped copper shielding tape around it.
A bit more elaborate than what Minelab used to do with the Sovereigns and Musketeers.
Did an in house test, before the mod could only run 7-8 before the EMI would make the Edge play musical tones.
Repeated the test after the mod, full sensitivity and now barely makes a false in disc or all metal mode.
The mod appears to have worked. The C$ with this type of mod, just may make it more stable as well.

Looking to get out in the morning and see what the Edge can find.

Hello Sven,
If I ever decide to sell 10" coil you will be the 1rst to know.
Thanks for the great tip on EMI. You are quite talented Sven.
Hope you have a Great day out with the ID EDGE. Like I say,
It's very under-rated and I believe it was because Fisher put it's
electronics in a much smaller box and I think most people just
find the smaller box less appealing but this little box PERFORMS!!!!!
Good Luck Sven!!!

Yea, the Edge performs. I had an Edge and a CoinStrike, both at the same time. A field test using a fresh buried silver dime at about 8" proved both detectors had the same depth capabilities.

Sven does the mod you done shield just the control circuit board?

Just to save you guys some time and effort. After numerous tests out in the field, same areas, same times, in my case the shielding made no difference after all dealing with EMI. At first I thought it did since the first time EMI was effecting the Edge in the house, after the shield no EMI. After thinking back, before the shield had the 8" coil on. About a week later after finishing the mod put the 6" coil that just came in. With the 6" coil, no EMI issues in the house.
I removed the shield permanently.
The shielding has helped Keith Southerns machine as he had a large size capacitor issue being right next to the box side, when he tapped on the box, it would false or if the humidity went up. I could not find that large cap on my board, so he must have had an early version of the Edge. My Edge works perfectly fine without the shield. As did the orig. two I had back in 2011.

The box shielding was something I might have tried in the near future. Jabbo
