Is the F5 really that good a machine:argue:

What do you mean by "that good of a machine?" It is a good mid-level tector I quess. I have little experience to back up this claim though!!

I don't know of another $500 detector I would rather have. Very lite and fast. When the 5.75" coil comes out I will get one.

I'm very pleased with mine, it does what it's meant to do (coinshooting) very well. Not as strong on low conductors.

The F75 and F70 are a little deeper they say, especially with the 11" DD.

But I've really gotten in sync with this machine and I'm very pleased with it's performance. When Fisher finally gets around to bringing out the 5" DD for it I'll be a really camper in the type of sites I often hunt in.

The F5 hasn't gotten a lot of respect, I noticed a nice used one go off on ebay a little while back for $230 something. The inexcusable joke of a manual that came with the F5 (it may be corrected now hopefully) was a book full of mistakes and I'm sure that didn't help the F5's rep.

As a matter of fact Fisher hasn't shown the F5 much respect. Starting with a manual that was obviously written by someone who didn't use the machine, followed up by minimal advertising, and then leisurely releasing accessory coils which are now scheduled to be out late May - early June if they are not delayed again.

Besides being an excellent machine, I think the F75 has the "top of the line advantage" which is more than just performance - you get a lot of detailed information from quite a few top notch dirt fishers who use it regularly and figure out and share a lot of tips on the machine.

The F5 doesn't that kind of heavy hitter usage so you don't get as much useful info shared. For those who have shared, thank you.

Special thanks to our F5 guru, Mike Hillis.

Life's short, Mike. You know how much you love to detect. You should get out with the F5 more and keep learning!

 It is an awesome machine! Have had mine now for about a month...I have 4 other mid to high price machines...the F5 is my goto machine now. I have pre-ordered a 11" DD for it and I have a F75 headed my way right now...but it will have to prove itself better than the F5. I have hunted fields, parks and trashy lots with it...this is a smoking machine! Now for the downside...for the life of me I can't find nickles...not that I like nickles all that much anyway but when I get a nickle signal in D3 tone mode....normally it is a piece of aluminum. Here is my best silver so far....I found this within the first HOUR that I used the F5. Now if I just knew who had the MDL initials!!! Found in the oldest part of our city...10" down. Dug a carriage token right before the locket.

There is a very narrow range of VDI numbers for nickels (as far as the confidence meter is concerned) on my F75 and I'm sure it's the same for the F5. I've dug buffalo nickels that were right on the line between foil and nickel. In my area a lot of pop can pull tabs read in the same area with nickels. If this means anything, I dig all signals (I go by sound first and then the VDI) that will lock in from 22 on up with the exception of some tab signals that have proven themselves to always be tab. The gold pendant locked in at 22 and was a very smooth repeatable signal.

I rarely even look at the numbers. I experimented with the notch and found that if I notch out everything but zinc, dimes and quarters...and have the disc just above All Metal...I can REALLY clean house on any coins down to about 6-7"....BUT I lose those deep coin signals. Then I come back with just iron notched and go sloooow for those deep ones. Works for me.

I love mine so far, just started detecting about a week ago, first machine I have every purchased and first time ever detecting. I did about 3 weeks of research on metal detectors and never really read anything negative about this machine and that was one of my reasons for the purchase of the F5. Have found a lot of junk (tons of tabs, beer cans, metal wire, etc.) so far, just learning the sounds and ID's, my best finds so far have been a 1903 Indian Head and a nice gold ring. The ring unfortunately was a friends that her daughter had lost in their yard about 2 years ago, I was getting numbers in between 28-34, so I pinpointed and it was showing 2 inch's down. The only thing I'm not getting so far is the coil, where on the coil is the hot spot, my wife will not quit laughing at all the holes I have dug in the yard that are about the size of the coil. Is it just in the middle oval area or back where the coil connects with the s-rod? As Marcomo stated above, the manual is not very helpful. Almost everything I have learned so far has been from forums like this and You tube video's. Thanks for the help and good luck detecting.

Mike Hillis made a post a few months ago with all the manual corrections. I'm guessing around Jan or Feb, you might want to search his archived posts to find it.

The sweet spot is in that middle oval area, to practice try swinging and pinpointing with some coins laying on top of clean ground.

Great to hear you're enjoying the machine, keep us posted on your finds and happy hunting!

The Fisher F Series detectors are a new line of detectors.

Some use a little prior detector technology and have with the old new technology. Some are all new based on T2- F75 technology.

Fisher F-series detectors are not the run of the mill detectors.

T-2 All new.developed under the teknetics name.......
F75 some T2 but added processing and capabilities.enhanced programs and as a result a little deeper on most applications
F70 simplified F75
F5 New technology with a touch of all that was good in prior technology.( Knob control on some applications)
F4- and F2 refined older technology that works exceptionally well for the investment.

For good solid performance Fisher F Series as a whole work exceptionally well.

Kieth I've used the F5 quite a lot, and I really like the machine for the most part. Unfortunately they got the programming a bit messed up on nickles IMHO. The F5 is quite different then the F70 or F75 in that nickles bounch around on the TID. The nickle and pull-tab range on the F5 are almost interchangeable, so when you get a pull-tab signal there's a high chance it's actually a nickle, and when you get a nickle signal, there's a good chance it's actually a pull-tab.

In other words, if you want to find nickles, you'll have to dig ALL pull-tab and nickle TIDs on the F5 because it can't seem to tell the difference when their in the ground (air-testing is another story) :ranting:

Aside from that, honestly it's a great little detector. I'm currently using the F5 as my backup machine to my F70 (I'm really starting to like the F70!).

hh,
Brian

The F5 has become my go to machine and is doing very well for me, but I'll admit nickels aren't its strong suit.

Hello all, new to the field and working with an F5. I was wondering, if I purchase a different coil, does it have to be a Fisher coil or will any brand work with any detector? Any info. will be helpful, thanks.

Welcome to the addiction

Not only will the coil have to be a Fisher, it will also have to specifically be designed to work with the F5. Currently the only coil out for it is the stock F5 coil, despite Fisher advertising additional coils since the F5 was released well over a year ago. They claim to have a 5" and 11" DD coil coming out soon....soon seems to be, not so soon in Fisher lingo, so don't hold your breath.

Jeff - Some coils may work for more than one detector in a particular manufacturer's line, but for the most part coils are not interchangable.

As for purchasing a different coil for the F5, right now you are S.O.L.

I have a 5" DD coil on preorder with Bill Crabtree (Mr. Bill) and he was told by Mike Scott of Fisher a few days ago they are delayed and will still be another 3-5 weeks. Fisher is also coming out with an 11" DD for the F5.

If you are going to order an extra coil it would be a good idea to hook up with one of the fine sponsors of this forum. You're going to pay about the same anywhere (you're sure not going to find a used one!) so you might as well go with one of the honest and reputable dealers who sponsor us here and have earned the goodwill of a lot of customers. Checking the feedback forum is a good idea too.

Dealers are in business to make money, of course. But the sponsors here are not in it for the quick buck, they can give you good advice as well.

I am loving my F-5. I have been hitting older ball fields and looking for coins. I just pulled out my plastic container the other day to get a count on my finds for the year. One thing I noticed about my jug full of coins is that I have only 2 nickles. The tone and ID hits I get on my pennies, dimes and quarters is unbelievable and wished the nickle hits would be better, but having said that, I am not digging much hit in the tab section.
