Is the AT Pro an upgrade?

John (Ma)

New member
I currently use a MXT on land. Without starting a brand war, I would like to hear thoughts from people that have experience using the MXT and AT Pro. I currently have an older MXT and like the features of the Pro. Just not sure if it will be any better other than the fact that the pro is waterproof. Thanks for any input.

In my opinion two very closely matched detectors. I like the balance/feel of the MXT better, but then I swung a Whites(Eagle Spectrum, XLT and DFX) for more than 20 years, but I now run the 5x8 DD coil on my AT Pro and believe it now feels better than my MXT did. I'd give an edge to the AT Pro on small gold and response time. Very good at pulling goodies in with trash even with the standard coil. I like the target ID system of the MXT much better than the AT Pro's. I don't know that I'd consider the AT Pro and "upgrade" over the MXT. I would say they are two very capable machine with different strengths.

John,
I was in the same boat as you. I have an old MXT(first one out) and bought an AT PRO. Now the MXT sits MOST of the time. I think the PRO seperate and pulls targets out over iron much better. DON'T get me wrong, I will never give up my MXT. I love them both just the AT PRO can pick out targets in iron infgested area better. JMO Here's one reason I can't give up the MXT. LOL:clapping:

I use both but when I go to the water the AT Pro
can contnuesly be used into the water and back out
on land without batting an eye.

Currently I have the MXT, AT Pro and CTX 3030. I feel I know the MXT and the AT Pro very well. Both machines are great coin and relic machines. The AT Pro is definitely lighter and you can swing it for hours with no fatigue. Most hunts don't last that many hours, so weight may not be a factor. At the present time the AT Pro is my goto machine. I honestly believe the CTX will become my # 1 machine, but I will never get rid of my AT or my MXT.

The real proof of how good any of these machines really are is how proficient the operator becomes in the language of each one. The depth of the CTX is greater than the MXT or the Pro. Having said that let's remember that most good finds are dug between 2 and 6 inches. Not all, but most. So having a detector that goes 12" is not mandatory. It's an asset once in a while.

I would recommend either of the two detectors to start out with. Both the MXT and the AT Pro are excellent detectors for a variety of metal detecting. Each has a short learning curve and will satisfy the most demanding detectorist for years of fun. Decisions need to be made concerning type of hunting, coins, jewelry, relics, water hunting, prospecting etc.
Once these are made you will make the proper decision.

The CTX is a machine that has a bit of a learning curve, and requires some prior experience in metal detecting by the operator. Owning an MXT or an AT Pro would provide the operator with the required experience to easily learn the CTX 3030 FBS format.

I have (3) AT-Pro's, a XP Deus, a White's V3i, and a Fisher F2. I also have owned but sold a Fisher CZ-21 and a Minelab CTX-3030...did not care for either of those 2 machines in the slightest! I love the AT-Pro...as you can see I own 3 of them. I have my primary one, one that I lend to a fellow hobbyist that wants to try one out or most of the time a buddy who can not afford a detector, and an emergency backup. If I would just stop buying more detectors my AT-Pro's would (all three) been paid for approx. 2 1/2 times just this past summer! For the price, quality, reliability, and versatility...I don't think there is any other detector that can even come close to beating it in its class (price range). I think alot of people overlook the incredible advantage of a waterproof machine...even if you don't water hunt, the ability to hit that normally busy park on a rainy day when it is vacant is priceless! Many people get to hung up on BRAND's, like any other purchase, just do your research. Watch video's, read thru the forums here and look at the results, and if possible find someone who has the model you are considering and see if you can give it a spin. I have let countless people try out my AT-Pro's...actually I started thinking I might be shooting myself in the foot...if they all were to go buy detectors I would have a lot of competition...:lmfao:

Yes

I had both and can tell you the At Pro has a better I'd system and it locks on nickels and pull tabs better. It's also a better ring machine than the Mxt and it costs less and can hunt more terrains because of the weather proofing. I just found my second gold ring with the At pro just today.
