Is the 505 as deep as the 705

Just wondering , I was thinking of getting a 505 and put a 6" concentric on it for trash picking

I'm pretty sure they are, just that the 705 has some more features.

I belive that the transmit/receive detection part is the same. The difference is primarily in how fine the adjustments are.
The 705 of course has GB Tracking, Tracking Offset, Beach Tracking, and Pinpoint Sizing features that the 505 doesn't.

thanks fellows I dont need all the extras, Like the back lite, I just may settle for the 505, under 3 pounds good ,, nice small coils, & frequency, good ground balance, I have owned the Musky and GT so I know minlabe is good,

Interesting you asked as I ran a 'test of depth' about two months ago.

I have both the X-Terra 705 & the 505 and have used my 6" HF DD on each machine to compare depth. From my field test in highly mineralized soils, I found the depth is the same on the 505 and 705 ... no noticeable difference. I would also say that my in-field tests also show the same results for 705 vs. 505 when testing the 10.5" MF DD and the stock 9" MF CC. Certainly the depth was greater for the 10.5" MF DD when compared to the 6" HF DD whether on the 705 or 505. And, of course the 9" MF CC did not perform as well in my soils. So, if you don't need the extra features offered on the 705, then I believe you will find you have comparable depth with the 505.

With that said, and although you did not ask...I grab my 705 for a majority of my hunting due to the extra features and ease of use. But, I keep the 6" HF DD on my 505 for use in trashy areas (particularly around campgrounds). I keep the 10.5" MF DD on the 705 for use in less cluttered areas.

Maybe this helps.

Having carried round the control box for a xterra 70 for a few months & regularly interchanging it with my 505 when out detecting (until i sold the 70) I would say they both see exactly the same targets at the same depths just displaying slightly different TID's due to the greater number on the 70/705.

thats good news, what really counts to me is the depth,

Technically ..Yes - if you have the 505 as stable as the 705 with identical settings it should be.

However, the 705 has Tracking and this auto adjusts the ground balance as you move along and as the soil conditions change - this gives it a big edge IMHO
To me, a stable machine is a deep machine.;)

If you are using the same coils on each then yes they are but they are supplied with different coils here in Limeyland , a 2 DD 10.5 in on the 705 and the consentric 9 in on the 305 and 505.

I found the 305 to be as deep as the 505.

I've seen people use the Auto Track feature on the 705 and it made a unstable, erratic number jumping signal smooth out so you could clearly make out what the target was. I can see how a signal just at the farthest range of the 505 giving an unreadable signal would have been made stable by using this feature on the 705. So yes this means the 705 effectively has a greater range.
I myself am considering buying a 505 or 705 and outfitting it with the new 3khz coils and using the 6" to clean up some previously unworkable sites.

I meant the last button on the left that activates the Targer ID Stabilizer not the autotrack. This stabilizer is only on the 705 and I've seen what it can do on my friends Xterras.

I have a 70 and my buddy has a 305. His will hear what mine will hear every time.

A few thoughts.....
1. if you are wanting to separate targets in trashy areas, you would be better served with a small DD coil opposed to the small concentric you mentioned.
2. In ideal situations, the 505 will hunt right along side the 705. In fact, if I am in an area with an abundance of deeply buried iron, I prefer the 505 due to it having a -9 indication on the ferrous side of the TID. I can reject -9 and greatly reduce the wrap around without worrying about missing big silver.
3. The Auto GB functionality of the 705 will allow you to obtain a more accurate ground phase than your ears allow you to set manually. And having the most accurate ground phase setting available is an important factor in maximizing depth of detection.
4. Other "enhanced" functionality of the 705 includes Auto NC (same reasoning as Auto GB) and more "precision" in chosing your operational settings. (more selections with less "distance" between settings)
5. Implementing a positive ground balance will enhance target response. Having it "on the fly" with Tracking GB Offset on the 705 is almost like cheating!
