Is that the phone or my 1500?

I (literally) only had 5 minutes to give my previously loved Garrett 1500 a test drive today at lunch. Using the factory settings (held down the power key) I got a "bong, bong, bong, bong...." sound. I know someone here mentioned a "Phone ringing" sound, but can't remember what it was supposed to indicate. If each one was a quarter, I should have taken the rest of the day off! I know that's not it, but what WAS it? The first thing I did dig (at a different spot) was a bunch of foil (sigh). It sounded like the belltone (sigh). As I said, the 1500 hasn't had a reasonable test drive yet, and I DO like the sweet belltone, but what's with the phone??? Should I crank up the descrim a bit?
Thanks in advance,
Tagamet

Could it be your overload tone? Try placing your coil over something big like your truck and see if it makes the same signal. Just a thought.

A friend loaned me a 1500 this week,I downloaded the manual and read it.I heard what you guys describe as the "phone-ring" oversize tone,by setting it right on a quarter, but what does the belltone sound like? Can you compare it to another noise?Or maybe, one of you smarter people can record the tones, and upload them?Trying to describe this to my wife is really tough, since I just got my 1st detector myself, and trying to learn it's tones.Thank You.

Just swing the coil 8 or 10 inches **above** a quarter and you should hear the Belltone. Swing it over a pull tab, to hear the difference.
Hope this helps,
