Is Tesoro's brown 8 inch coil.....................

Ivan

New member
..............any good?I was told that it was kind of their "bottom of the line" poorer performing coil by a competing dealer. So I need to get some honest advice and info on this coil , hopefully from people who have used it!!! I'm planning to get my wife a Tesoro Silver UMax which has this coil supplied...........now I'm not so confident. What are the strengths and weaknesses compared to the whiite spoked coils???Also I was told that the spoked white coils are much hotter on gold rings............... and that the old brown coil is more adequate for coins; not jewelry or rings.......any truth to this?? Still have my heart set on the Silver UMax seems like a nice simple starter unit but this coil thing is bugging me.............guys need your help. Thanks.

I use both the 8" brown donut and the 8X9 spider. I haven't seen enough difference between the two to be worth mentioning. In fact, I've recently been using the 8" on my DeLeon just to see, and if anything, I like it a touch better.
I've seen a post by Monte where he mentions he hates that coil, but didn't give any specific reason for his opinion. At any rate one can interchange the coils on the Silver if desired and I'd consider a 7" concentric as an extra if you run into a decent used one. JMHO

Your competing dealer doesn't know what he is talking about. The 8 inch brown coil works just fine for general hunting. I can't see much difference on my Silver

I have the 8" brown donut and the 8x9 that I use on my Cortes and the Golden. I compared the two coils and they are equal for coins and gold jewelry in my opinion.

found lots o rings with the 8 inch donut coil i prefer it over the spoked coil

I call BS,,,it works great

It's great and has good depth and really hits the small stuff, also. Only drawback, if I were picky, would be getting close to playground equipment-even picks up the metal holders on the swing seats if they're closer than two feet!

ive used the brown coil the white coil and the spider coil but i cant tell any difference in any of them to me it seems if you go over a target you find it with any of the coils and i cant see anybody takin 2-3 coils out with them to test which one is good and which is not just my opinion

I also did a air test using the donut coil and the spoked coil on both the Silver umax and Eldorado.
Didn't see any difference in performance. I think Monte doesn't like the brown color. The donut coil glides thru the water if shallow water hunting,
While the spoked coil has a little drag as the water works it's way around the holes in the spokes.

And when properly balanced the 10 X 12 is a monster & has become my favorite coil. That doesn't mean the stock coil is bad. It works fine but I do see some advantages in the other coils.

For coverage the 10x12 works as advertised. What suprised me is it rejects caps & trash a bit better. Same with the 7".

The #1 thing to learn with the Silver & other Tesoro's is the "Tesoro shake". When a target is located & sized- do a quick shake of the coil over the target. If the target stays solid dig. If it breaks up it could be just a small target but more likely it is trash or a bottlecap. It works with the stock coil but with the 10 x 12 & the 7" it is very noticeable.

I use this to my advantage when trying to cover lots of ground. If the target rings solid on a fast sweep it should be dug. If you have multiple targets close to each other I'll take out the strongest signal 1st & work backwards so to speak. When you do the shake on a small target its like the rattle in a can of paint. If you can get the target to stay solid like that its most likely a coin.

The 5.75 was good in trash-but it was stolen a while back. I went with the 7" to replace it. Frankly it is very close to the stock coil except when in heavy trash-there its much easier to ear the targets discriminate.

But the 10 x 12 is great in trash also-just slow way down & let the machine seperate the targets. In heavy iron I have had to downsize due to all the comotion- but thats fairly rare & mainly annoying listening to all the trash.

Cheers & remeber the "Tesoro shake" is the key!.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH DARKFLIGHT--- AGAIN GO WITH BOTH COILS, MY SELF I HAVE THE OLD SQUARE BOX GOLDEN SABER AND USE MY 11" C/DISC AND 10" DONUT FOR THE DEEEP STUFF, AND THE 9 3/4" X 8 1/2" SPIDER AND MY 8 1/2" DEEP WIDE SCAN FOR HOT GROUND, BUT FOR HIGH TRASH AREA'S I WILL USE EITHER MY 7" C/DISC COIL OR THE 7" DEEP WIDE SCAN COIL BUT THEY ALL ARE GREAT COILS FOR THE TYPE OF HUNTING YOU CHOOSE AND THE TYPE OF GROUND/TRASH CONDITION YOUR IN. WHEN I GO TO A UNKNOWN SITE I ALWAYS TAKE EXTRA TYPE AND SIZES OF COILS SO I'M PREPARED FOR THE GROUND CONDITIONS. THE WAY I SEE IT YOU CAN GET ADDICTED TO BUYING INTO ALL THAT "BRAND HIP" WITH MORE BELLS AND WHISTLES FOR THE BUCK ( I DID 18 DETECTORS) OR MASTER WHAT U GOT WITH THE COILS TO MATCH THE JOB. BOTTOM LINE TESORO RECENTLY REPAIRED MY 25 YEAR OLD GOLDEN SABER AND CALIBRATED AND CHECKED ALL MY COILS FOR FREE UNDER THE WARRANTY! I ALSO I SENT SOME OF MY OTHER DETECTORS BACK TO (ALWAYS) THE FACTORY FOR REPAIRS AND IT COST ME OVER $300+.( THE PRICE OF A NEW SILVER SABER.) SO ALWAYS MAKE IT YOUR CHOICE. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A BLESSED EVERY DAY.

You might want to try typing without the caps lock on.
Thanks

I saw this in a thread he asked me a Q on so I figured I'd post. Yes I find all caps annoying but in this case I understand.

"EXCUSE THE CAPS I 'M 69 YEARS OLD AND HAVE POOR EYE SIGHT BUT STILL HUNT. THANK YOU AND HAVE A BLESSED EVERY DAY"

Hi Darkflight

Very interesting post !

The #1 thing to learn with the Silver & other Tesoro's is the "Tesoro shake". When a target is located & sized- do a quick shake of the coil over the target. If the target stays solid dig. Re your above paragraph, could you describe the "Tesoro shake" with a little more detail ? I know you said "shake", but one can shake something in different ways, i.e. laterally East to West, up and down and wobble motion, just to name a few. By "wobble", I am referring to tilting the right edge of the coil down toward the ground a few degrees, then the left edge, etc., etc. and done fairly fast, but not to the point of causing injury to any part of the metal detector.

Thanks......................Todd :)
