I keep reading about all these different coils on the se's I hunt mostly old homes and old grist mills will my stock coil be ok with this or should I invest in another coil thanks

Your stock coil should be fine. The problems are for the most part resolved.
If you should have a bad coil, Minelab will replace it ASAP.
Once you have used and become familiar with your machine, then try a smaller coil in those trashy areas.
Don't get confused with all the chit chat on the forum until you've used your machine for a month or two with the preset programs.
I think a lot of new people to the SE try to keep up with the more experienced users too early. All that does is get one totally confused.

ok thanks for your reply I have a lot of good places to look and I dont want to go look them until I get more familiar with this machine :twodetecting:

Why wait? Go get the good stuff. You'll learn much quicker by digging good targets as well as bad.
Hows that go ? Show us the money or goodies

well I am afraid ill miss some of the good targets but I guess Ill go and see what I find and then later when I get used to it Ill go over it again and see if I missed anything Thanks for the help !!!

Contrary to what you have been advised so far, get a small coil, assuming you have the funds you are willing to use for that. The small coil will allow you to learn faster I think, as the signals will tend to be more isolated, and not compromised by as much trash. I hunt mostly older homes as well, and they have a lot of junk in them it seems, at least in the area I live. Learn the machine's response to different environments, and then, learn again. Go SLOWLY and listen to the fainter sounds. The 5 inch is known to be a great separator of signals, and you will learn to tell the sound of trashy iron, nails, coins, etc. Of course, I would dig everything for a month or so, as I express to everyone. Depending where you are, it is good to dig everything in some places regardless......

For my arsenal, I use a WOT, the 10.5 inch, the 5 X 11 Elliptical, the 8 inch, and a 5 inch coil. EACH has it's place. Of those listed, I use the 5 inch, then the 8 inch, then the elliptical in terms of frequency of use. As a full disclosure though, the older homesites I hunt usually are scraped lots in an older part of town. Lots of trash, lots of treasure as well. The larger coil will average the signal some. With the small coil, I still get a sweet note out of the middle of trash it seems. Lately, I have found a Virginia Staff button, and a really neat token right in the middle of a bunch of trash, due to the sweet tone which came through.

ok thanks for the reply alot of my sites are FULL of trash so Ill play around with some different setups HH

I used the stock coil for my first hunt...mine was extremely stable. The only thing right away is remember to turn the pinpoint off...otherwise when you set detector down to dig...you will get several signals.... with the dfx...my coil of choice was the 5.3...so I am sure i will end up with a 5 and 8 inch with the se also.

When I first got my SE I went out to some of the sites I had been scoping out just to get used to the machine. Of course they were trashy but I learned a lot. After I had creeped up a bit on the old learning curve I returned and was amazed at what I could identify and dig up. I'm still learning the SE and hopefully, soon will be proficient (in my own mind at least). I have since gotten the 8 inch ML coil and it has allowed me to get "in between" a lot of the trash. Next to the X-1 probe, it's my best accessory for the SE.
