Is river searching possible?

Hey my uncle has some woods with a very shallow river, like 8 inches at the most. and i was wondering how i could search that river and would it be worth it?

this is my view on it....since there probably isn't any boating, canoeing or swimming done in the shallow river to lose anything in the water by accidents, I doubt it...but could be washed down from upstream if there is deeper water where things could have been lost! But if you want to wade and try detecting for awhile....go for it...if ya don't find anything then you will know for sure and quit!

God Bless & Happy Hunting!
Betty

that if there are any beaches or swimming holes you would find things. But if just a wandering stream maybe not.
Strange as it sounds -we have a few rivers out here in the desert that guys detect. They are popular with tubers and they float them all buzzed up lots of the times. All along the routes they lose stuff. The rivers are not big, wide or full so it is easier I'm told. Lots of large rocks & sand bars. Steve in so az

Toby, try the "Beach and Water Detecting Forum" under Treasure Forums, above. I've seens some pictures of detectorists out in streams and rivers, too.

yes, it is! rivers are raely searched because som don't know that it is
possible other know and don't want to get their feet wet in case of deep water not everbody has the money for underwater detectors

My detector is not underwater but it is water proof up to the box. I'm not sure if I could get away with that or not? Huh have to see how deep it is right now and how fast it is. but I'm not concerned of getting wet just ruining my detector. Maybe I can make my other one under water by sealing it up?

...on some of the farms where I have searched for C.W. artifacts I have hunted small streams. Most of my finds were on the banks of the streams. I searched in one shallow stream for about an hour but only found aluminum cans, foil, etc. I made sure to check all the sand bars and the deeper areas, in this stream only about a foot deep. On one farm I dug 12" down on a solid bullet signal only to find a lead bell sinker. If there were any Union camps in the area they always camped near streams. And as someone else mentioned, if it is used to float down people are bound to lose things. Mostly beer cans!

Make sure your coil is waterproof. If you hunt in the water do not lift the coil above the box as water can travel down the tube and fry your electronics. Read your manual to be sure the coil is waterproof and be very careful. I would suggest taking someone else with you when searching streams because it is easy to slip and sprain an ankle, or worse.

Good luck,

Rivers can be good if they had the people there to lose stuff. Also only hunt shallow slow moving water for safety reasons!

i dunno where yer located but you say it's a shallow river ? Leave yer tector at home, grab a gold pan, a strong scoop and a bucket to carry yer material to the bank in and pan that stuff out for gold. Also look especialy for cracked bedrock and bedrock with eddys and gravel bars.
AAAHHHHHHH........ color in the pan :wiggle:

There was a whole lot of nothing maninly trash. But I did see some flacks that looked like goold here and there. It was fun though.

Oh yeah-- ya better believe it...:thumbup:Up here in Michigan;we got the Rifle and Au Sable Rivers-VERY popular with canoeists!!!:inlove:They have canoe rentals all along these rivers, and all summer, they are paddling down them(from what I understand,a lot of them are;shall we say,a 'little tipsy")....:wacko:I have heard many stories of wallets;jewelry, cameras, pockets full of money,watches,etc,etc.....falling out of pockets and canoes(-when ya have been drinking;you can lose track of things, take my word for it....)...and never being found by them....I think the deep holes in rivers would be especially good to detect-all that heavy money and jewelry travel downstream, and would settle in deep holes eventually...:detecting::cool::thumbup::fisher::usaflag:

Have fun, post away! :) God bless!
