Is my HH PI bad or do they all act this way? and a question about PI air tests

hobbit

Just got a new HH PI with an 11" coil and I am having a lot of problems with falsing. The detector seems to be incredibly sensitive to changes in coil height and to slight bumps...and it reacts to these with an abrupt increase in threshold. If I swing the coil VERY slowly and under complete control the threshold is grainy/ warbly but probably acceptable. Are all HH PI's this way or should I think about returning mine? I do not want to go to the 8" coil because I think it defeats the purpose of having the HH PI over the Dual Field. Also, what kind of depth should I expect on an air test of a US nickle with this machine? I realize this will be somewhat subjective due to possible interference, but this machine does not air test any better than my Tesoro Sand Shark with an 8" coil. This has me very concerned. Thanks in advance.

I am certainly no expert, being new to PI, but it sounds to me that the sensitivity/gain is set too high, but looking at the manual for the HH it is showing as the Frequency control. Try lowering this while keeping the threshold (Tune) high enough above the warble to where it is steady at your sweep speed.

Thanks, Neil. Unfortunately I'ver already tried that and it helps somewhat, but doesn't make the detector "stable". Indeed, with the frequency control at its most clockwise position I would call the detector unuseable. When I back it down to the 1-2 o'clock position the stability improves, but still leaves much to be desired IMO.

More info would help here. Have you tried it out in the field away from all interference? I know I have 3 different PI detectors, and none of them will run good if I am even close to houses or electrical lines. They just pick up too much interference and go crazy.

If this is a new unit, I would contact your dealer, and ask them to step in for you with this problem. That's why their a dealer.

You can send the unit back to the manufacture, and have them check it over. This perhaps is the best thing to do. If it's new, it's warrantied if it's broken. Even with no warranty, it's still your best bet. Detector Pro is perhaps the company that charges the least amount for detector repairs, and the turn-a-round time is like a week.

If your sending it back, just send the headphones, & the coil, (s). It will fit in a small box, and it's not expensive to send.

Thanks for all the replies. After another night in the field at three different beach locations I am convinced that I have a defective unit...I think the coil may be the problem. I am sending it to DetectorPro for a check-up on Tuesday...

I bought one just recently and have only used it a couple of times and I have the 11'' coil and have had no problems with it. It sounds like it is a defective coil. Good luck!
