Is my G2 working right?

Can anyone give me some idea if my G2 is working properly......or is it me who isn't?!

After reading about faulty Tek coils I'm wondering if my inexperience is getting the better of me or if in fact I may have a faulty detector. Is it normal to get iron signals (rusty nails and bottle caps) coming in around 70?......I thought they'd be a lower value.

My back yard is, underground, so similar to a hardware store I can hardly ground balance the detector for lack of finding a small clean area to do it. All-metal mode was hopeless so at practice tonight I was running Gain at 95 and Discrimination at 40 and still the signals were all over the place. I couldn't figure out where to dig there was so much beeping and burping going on. Turning down the gain did help....just didn't have enough time to play with it before dark settled in.

Not much of an explanation I know, I'm obviously still learning, so any assistance is appreciated.
Cheers,
PJ

Hey PJ
Find a clean place to ground balance the G2 now put the G2 in Disc.mode.
Take it out to the sidewalk run it over the sidewalk to make sure there is no metal there if so .... place a quarter on the sidewalk should read 85 then try a nickle read 58 and a dime read 83 if it reads like it should its not broke.
Your yard must be full of junk and good targets, so try a neighbors yard...the G2 is very fast and will pick up all the metal in the yard so slow down and try to isolate some good targets...the ground bal. is very inportant and can only be done in All Metal mode and carries over the Disc. mode.
Try running disc.all the way up and set sens. at the 12 oclock for a while go slow and see if that works.Yes bottle caps hit high ( see the sticky at the top of the Gold Bug/G2 forum about bottle caps)

you will find out that larger metal objects will read way higher than iron, you can get a idea of how large the target is when pinpointing it takes alot of practice the more ya dig the more you learn hh

In general bottle caps give DD coils a hard time ., nails should not be a problem.
With that much trash , All Metal would be a tough way to start.
As GAP Said start with some test objects and then add some junk near them .
Put them on top of a card board box if you have to , if clean ground is not there.

Focus on the pinpoint, size of the dime vs other big targets.
A soda can will read like a coin on ID but between raising the coil and using pinpoint to size the target
it should not be a problem.
