I have been hearing allot of talk of the X-Terra line being a bit long for some users. Is Minelab aware of this gripe and do they have any plans to make adjustments to future models. I am 5'10" is their anyone else out there around my size who is happy or unhappy with the length of the X-Terra series. Other than that I know it is a fantastic unit and I am very interested in it being my new detector this upcoming spring. Oh and one more thing. I have also read some posts on the arm cup detector stand being to narrow which results in the detector tipping over once laid down. Is Minelab aware and do they have plans to fix this feature as well.
Thanks in advance for any reply
Jason

Hi Jason,

I am 5'11". I run the X-Terra on the 4th hole up out of 6. So there are two shorter adjustments for me, and three longer. If anything I might run it out to the 3rd hole to make it longer, not shorter, depending on where I am.

In other words, for me, at 5'11", the X-Terra is perfect for length. Should be fine for you also.

So all the talk of too long boils down to "too long for who"? People shorter than what height, exactly?

I run White's machines a lot, and always have them on the last hole, so for me they are on the verge of "too short". White's makes a "tall man rod" for those who need it.

So maybe Minelab needs a "short man rod"!

Stand widths:

X-Terra 3-1/4"
Vaquero 3-5/8"
ID Edge 3-3/4"
Prizm 3-7/8"
Ace 3-1/2"

Is the X-Terra slightly narrow? Yes. Is it broken and needs fixing? I would not hold my breath. Personally I find anything other than the base of a White's box to be tippy. Any of the above units tip over easily compared to my MXT or DFX.

Hi, Jason.

I personally don't get all of the comments about the X-Terra rod being too long. I'm 5' 8" & my 50 is set up just like Steve's: 2 shorter adjustments & 3 longer. It fits me perfectly & I can swing the thing all day & not get tired.

As for the arm/cup stand combo, the only time that I ever had a problem with the unit tipping over was at a park where the ground was really chopped up (i.e. not level at all). In that case I just made sure that I had the stand on a flat portion of the ground when I set it down. Otherwise I have never had any problem with the detector tipping over.

As to Minelab's addressing these issues, I frankly don't know.

So to sum up, I really don't think that the shaft length or stand issues should be of a concern to you in terms of your decision to buy an X-Terra or not.

Good luck in making your decision!

spazticlaugh,

When I first got the x-terra I felt it was too long ONLY based on how I had my other unit setup.

Once I used the x-terra a couple of days, the feeling changed. It is very lightweight and easy to swing out further from yourself which also creates a longer arc which in turn covers more ground per swing.

I am confident that there is no need for concern in this area.

Since the armrest and stand are moulded in the one injection moulding die, I wouldn't hold my breath for the stand to be changed any time soon.

Funny really... I designed the stand and was told it was fine all through development!
